cat-back exhaust question

so i've been looking around on AF and on ebay at catbacks and i havent been able to find a reason as to why there are different catback exhaust setups for different models of the same years. i get why the hatchback would be different but besides that i would think it would be the same right? or are there differences in the length of the piping or the bends?

Length and Bends have absolutely nothing different when it comes to having the same model. They should all apply the same. Width is the only thing and of course the wider the piping the louder the noise, better airflow, etc. But you shouldn't have a problem with bends and length when it comes to Exhaust. Good Luck with it. And if you need a Muffler I have an OBX racing muff that I will sell you for $115.

well i figured the piping would be the same but i wounder cause some of the models have the cat converter built into the exhaust manifold and some dont...so wouldnt the ones with it in the exhaust be shorter in order to fit it in? i dont really know much about it, thats only why i'm asking. i'm not sure if the setup i want will work. did any of that make sense?

Another difference in exhausts is the materials used for the pipes and also the welds. But as for them not fitting whichever exhaust is stated for each vehicle and trim will fit.

That's pretty much the reason. Also how the piping bolts up to the header makes a differance too. Si cat-back would be different than EX cat-back. Just as DX/LX cat back would have longer piping than EX cat-back due to catalytic converter location. This is all in terms of '96-'00 Civic I'm refering to here.

ok so assuming that an ex header would bolt up to all of the d16 blocks (such as my hx model) the same then couldnt you use an ex header with a high flow cat for the ex and an ex cat back exhaust and it would all bolt up as long as the header bolts to the head the same. so does the ex header work on other models for bolting up or is the bolt pattern different?

As far as I know, the EX header should bolt up to a DX, since they use the same block, just different heads. The intake manifold can be swapped between them as well, so you can swap an EX header to your LX motor, and it'll fit. :bigthumb:

the header attaches to the head, not the block, so having different heads and same blocks means nothing.
the ex header will bolt right to the the dx, because internal parts are different, but the bolt pattern on the head is identitcal. if you attached the ex header, ex cat, and an exhuast for the ex, it will bolt up with no problems.

so do you think that setup will work for any of the d16 motors cause the bolt patterns are the same and it wouldnt throw a code to the ecu or would it?
i just want to be sure before i waste my money on the wrong parts that dont bolt up right or wont fit or cause problems with the ecu.

attaching an ex header to your dx motor will not trigger any codes to be thrown, as long as all the sensors are re-attached and working.

Incorrect, unless you add on an aftermarket cat converter, then your ECU WILL throw error codes. Remember than the DX cat is built INTO the stock header. You yank it out, and say goodbye to your cat unless you add an EX or aftermarket one to the end of the EX header.

I actually have the HX motor but its the same thing pretty much with the cat on the exhaust manifold. i was planning on getting the ex header with an ex high flow cat and an ex catback exhaust. this will all work as far as i know right? as long as the ex header bolts up to the head correctly? so does anyone know if the bolt pattern is the same?

Yup, that setup will work. :) AFAIK, all D-series manifolds should interchange with eachother, except for the DOHC ZC D-series motor.

folks, there's proof that post count doesn't always necessarily mean more knowledge....(nothing against crxlvr)

it was written as to assume he be replacing the cat and re positioning his 2nd O2 sensor to get the readings from the after the cat.

oh it's cool, i wasn't really following what you guys were saying anyway. I just like the (in british accent) "you are incorrect sir," that i heard somewhere.
