1996 Trouble with auto headlights

Vehicle is 3.1 V6 Grand Am GT 4-door, Canadian with Daytime Running Lights & Twilight Sentinal Auto headlights.
Problem: DRL works OK, Auto headlights only turn on headlights, dash & parking/tail lamps don't come on.
Using the manual light switch everything works OK (thank goodness).
Problem first started with a loud buzz under the hood somewhere, like a failing relay or something. After a few seconds (just enough time so I could never make it out of the car & open the hood before it quit!) all would work OK. Finally, whatever the problem was failed completely and I have the stated problem.
Its kind of tough to troubleshoot without a wiring diagram. Can anyone help?
