Need help on Engine infomation+Tuning

Hi,
i was wondering if my engine is a stage 3 vtec not just vtec-e because i have a Civic 1.5LSi Vtec and its a HB EK3 and the engine code is D15Z6, i know it has an economic mode when i drive in third/fourth/fith below 2.5k but above that it goes into normal mode and then at 4.8k-5k then engine becomes much faster like a normal SOHC vtec. The thing is that i compare the engine with the engine D16Z6 which is a SOHC VTEC now my engine is the same but 100cc less and the bonus of VTEC-E if so my car is a hybrid VTEC or STAGE 3 vtec? i am tired of looking around for info but no luck my car has 114bhp stock can anyone help me???????????
Also i plan to modify it and have the following installed over the next month AEM v2, Nology Leads&Plugs, FSE Boost valve, Ecotek Valve, S/S Supersprint 4-2-1 mainfold + straight through exhaust + no Catalict convertor.
how Much power you think i will get with what i have mentioned and is it worth it ? Don't mention Engine swaps coz here in gibraltar that kind of stuff they don't do coz it costs the bomb, and no mechanics here are bothered + i don't have the cash.

Who in the hell told you about this shit stage 3 vtec? economic mode? All honda cars are economy cars therefore ALWAYS being economical. Its always in normal mode a car isnt retarded when it wants to be only when its broken. Your never going to find the info your looking for becuase I dont think it exists and the mods you listed your looking at like 5whp.

Yes i know all Hondas are economic, but the are some with vtec-e technology(the one that the green econo lights up on the dash when cruising below 2.5k in any gear above second) and some with 2-stage vtec and 3-stage vtec these are only on SOHC. I Just Want to know what type is mine cause different websites say different stuff.

Aslo i forgot that the gain with the mods i mentioned can't be 5hp
thats impossible , i had some with less mods than that (just a K&N filter and supersprint header with sporty exhuast) and he dynoed it and it was about 127BHP thats about 13HP

I was refering to wheel horsepower not base power and that green light you sure thats not your cruise control. I hate to break it to you but theres only one kind of vtec buddy they all do the same thing. Explain these so called stages could you please.

I didn't mean cruise control , i meant like going for ride (cruising) (riding at low rpms below 2.5k if you want the econo light to come on)

I'm sorry but I find all of that to be false I dunno where you are from but it seems to be over seas but here in the states vtec is a big hype and being that its such a big hype and my uncle is a honda mechanic and I hang out at a speed shop it just amazes me how Ive never heard of such a thing that site is saying that vtec on dohc motors does one thing and then on a sohc does something else and then something else for another..... no vtec does the same thing for alll motors just using bigger cam lobes to sum it up I find all of that to be false. and driving under 2.5 rpm is totally dogging it real bad cruising rpms is 3 grand.

Its true i just spoken to a Local Honda Specialist he says there are several VTEC types. And if you want Econo mode you need to be below 2.5k. Anyway here in Gibralatar you won't go past 2k unless you're overtaking in the incoming traffic lane. lolol like me.

well you say its a 1.5lsi we have a model here thats an si but its not on the 99 hatches just the coupe as for it being similar to a d16z6 yeah its just a point litre less. But to try and help you more do you have a sunroof, power windows,power door locks, did it come with cd player to cassette or just radio? Did it come with A/C? Basicly an EX has all of those things and the lower lines get less and less. We really dont go by base horsepower here its all about the wheel horsepower but 5 whp is noticable but when it comes to ordering stuff usually hatches have a category of there own like it will say 96-00 coupe and then be one for a hatch but who knows. Things to order would be your basics intake, header, exhaust, cam gear things like that.

Got bored, so I did a search.
There is stages to vtec, Well at least now there is (http://autozine.kyul.net/technical_school/engine/vvt_2.htm) I stopped payin attention to vtec along time ago. I didn't know they they made stages for the thing.
It seems that every link I found ended having the same stuff like whats in this link. Pretty much the same diagram and all that. eh:icon16:

driving under 2.5 rpm is totally dogging it real bad cruising rpms is 3 grand.
first of all the rpms that you cruise at varies with different cars. my car is designed to cruise well at about 2K rpms without bogging and i have a civic HX.
second of all I know it isnt an EX, HX, Dx because the Dx is non-vtec, the HX is vtec-e (i have this in my car and the car comes stock will alloy wheels) the EX is a stage 2 vtec. so there are different kinds of vtec, at least 2 kinds in the US. you might have the same engine as the cx or vx models but i'm not really sure. i believe they are 1.5 L but i dont think they have any vtec.

First of All my car has VTEC due to the fact the badge is stuck to the back from stock. Second the engine code is like the EX(D16Z6) but instead its a D15 not D16 just 100cc less. Also i can feel the vtec kick in about 4.8-5k and at 2.5k or below the economic green light lights up indicating the car in in econo mode, thus this proves that it had vtec-e (for low rpm )but also it seems to have vtec(for higher rpm). Today i just ordered my AEM V2 and i asked the guy who was selling it and he said that my car was an EX mini me, but no one has still provided me with enough infomation to confirm this. i am its like my car has the EX engine Z6 part and then just stuck a VTEC E D15 part!!! damn it i ust want to know which isss my car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i'd say thats a ex but civic hatches dont make ex they only have dx, vx and cx so did u buy ur car brand new or off of someone else? cuz u might have a motor swap in ur hatch just maybe i dunno.

just because it has a certain badge on it doesnt mean much. i've seen and heard of cars that are badged wrong or purposely badged differently. even if it looks like factory doesnt mean it is. its not too hard to repaint it or put a different badge on. happens all the time.
also i havent heard of cars having a stock vtec light. i've only heard of people adding them on their own.
your car could have a mini me swap. its the only way i could understand a 1.5 L engine having a vtec. my guess would be a 1.5 block with an ex head and then the car being badged as vtec. or it could just be a model not sold where i'm from.

also he's correct about the 2500rpm thingy.
Let me explain:

the engine only uses 12valves when you are easy on the gas and stay beneath the 2500 rpm zone.
In 2nd,3rd, and 4th gear taht is.
In fifth gear they stay in te 12v mode(=econo=green light in console) until you reach the 120km/h mark.
also the Vtec kicks in @ 3800rpm and the redline is 7000rpm(could be 7100 also)
as far as I know this engine doesn't seem to be available in the US.
only in the EU regions
I hope that this info could be of some help in finding out which car you have.
If anyone of the americans on the forum here could lay his/her hand on some tech. info about the D15Z engine and you can/will send it to me you would have my everlasting thanks.

Well my friend let me say a few facts after i have research the entire Web. NO its not the same as the D15Z from USD. In the US they have
D15Z1,D15Z8 and some other but not the D15Z6, basically this is a hybrid VTEC i think its a two stage vtec similar to 3 stage but not as refined, Also this car is known as Civic EX because i just ordered a AEM V2 from a Honda specialist in UK and they told me that its a EX due to the Z6 part in the engine (i don't know if thats the block or head) and due to the the equipment, the thing is mine was bought custom (e.g no air con, no sunroof,no alloys) so it came cheaper but i spoke to the owner of the car and the car actually came with those things but she didnt won't them. I came across the 2 stage vtec when searching for parts, my car with the same engine code appeared and besides it said VTEC II and then another 1.5 but the D15Z1 had VTEC-E beside it. my conlclusion is that its a 1.5 with EX VTEC and vtec E as well. Also the vtec kicks in at 4.5-4.8 not 3.8. 3.8k is too low for vtec even in a Sohc.
Anyway baskeheurs if you have more info just msg me or post it here!

Civicsi1.5, where are you located? When you say Gibraltar, do mean around Africa? The motor you are describing sounds like one of the off motors we have in Germany that doesn't quite match anything in the states. Anyway the little green light is a shiftlight, you could call it an economy light or whatever, and yes the engine does sing in the higher RPM range, as it is a off shoot of the Z1 in the US VX, but you can't trust model names like Si,EX etc.. since they vary too much between countries. It may very well be the three stage vtec like in the JDM D15B, since that motor is know for it's economy and but is rated at 130ps, and you say it dyno'ed around 124whp which is about right for that motor with a couple mods. So it is probably just a D15B with a regional motor code that doesn't correspond with what is released in the states, or other places.

They've made the D15Z1,D15Z3 (both VTEC-E) and 90Bhp
then they've made the D15Z6,D15Z8 (both VTEC-E) and 114Bhp
all of these are 3stage VTEC's don't be fooled with the E.
The E only stand's for the 12 valve thing I explained earlier.
And be sure that the 3800 VTEC kick in is correct.

Now what you were saying about the 2stage VTEC is in some way correct.
Honda has mede a block with 2 stage vtec also. with 1493 cc.
but that is an engine only produced in 5-door EU models.
You say that yours is an 3 door so it's surely an 1.5 VTEC-E.
with 3 stage VTEC and so on.
You say faster than 10.2!!

and even A 3 door 1.5 isn't (verry)fast.
Normally the 1.5 vtec's are economic thingy's like the american HF's.
They also reach their top speed in 4th gear.
So the fifth gear is pure economical.
That's the bad thing about these cars.
The gears are so long that the car loses much of it's "spark" when your flooring it.
I'm trying to find out which gearbox could fit under mine so I have a real 5-speed tranny. (now they are 4gear with an 5thfor saving fuel.)

It has the green light which has the carachteristics (sp) discussed earlier..
Im not that mechanically minded but I would be interested to see any pics of 5 doors and to find out more information on my engine.. what parts have you managed to source etc.. I have found one company able to offer me an Injen induction kit but white dials are a no go.

Hi,
I also have a 1.5lsi, VTEC-E 3dr civic hatch. Can I ask what top speed I should be getting from the D15Z6?? I didn't even know there was supposed to be a kick at 3.8K rpm, I dont get anything noticeable. To me this car seems like it struggles. Is there anything I could do, or is this how the D15Z6 is? It also vibrates while idling.
Also, if the car wants to pull to either side when pulling off, breaking and/or on un-even ground what could be the problem. Turning right @ slow speeds makes the back right bounce?? I have had my tracking done.

There is no kick with the VTEC-E vtec's.
it's not like the B16A's
The top speed should be around 190-200Kmh.

first of all, im in the united states and am not planning on going to any european country therefore i will never know what the fog is like over there and will never need to have rear fog lights so yes....they are really stupid IMO. Second of all, i did already know what the rear fogs were used for, just didnt know of anyone or anywhere who would need them which is why i said they were stupid cause i thought they were just a waste of money. I mean that it's so dens that you sometimes can't even see what's in front of you within 10-15 meters.
So I think it's not that ad to have foglights.
also our roads arent in that good shape.
which makes it feel you as driver feel a bit safer when you can see the car in front of you.

thankfully the car in front of me used his foglights because that wa the ONLY thing i could see(apart from brakinglight because they are the same "stenght in light")

I'm sorry but I find all of that to be false I dunno where you are from but it seems to be over seas but here in the states vtec is a big hype and being that its such a big hype and my uncle is a honda mechanic and I hang out at a speed shop it just amazes me how Ive never heard of such a thing that site is saying that vtec on dohc motors does one thing and then on a sohc does something else and then something else for another..... no vtec does the same thing for alll motors just using bigger cam lobes to sum it up I find all of that to be false. and driving under 2.5 rpm is totally dogging it real bad cruising rpms is 3 grand.

You would probably also sacrifice the economy that it already achieves. So not many people, if any, have thought of using that engine as a tuning base. Especially when the higer powered b16a is there for the taking.
Hence the different types of Vtec.

Del Sols had B16A3's in them, along with D16Z6's and D15B7's, aside from your local releases, they did come with them.

yeah i used to have one with the d16z6 in it.. not a bad running little motor. its a good budget turbo motor too. i hear that the d16s can handle near as much as and LS due to steel crank and stronger rods and stuff i guess

ive never heard of an economical si,no matter where it's sold,so i doubt it's vtec-e,and ever since the introduction of the obd 2 JDM sohc d15b,in about 1996,all vtec has been 3 stage.

It's surely not 3-stage, since there is only one VTEC actuator (VTEC switch) on the side of the head assembly. 3-stage VTEC engines have two actuators for the shifts from stage-1 to stage-2 and stage-2 to stage-3 (visit http://asia.vtec.net/topics/enginevtec.html).
I have a 1997 EK3 hatch with d15z6.

i have a stage 3 vtec but i cant get mine to come on at all because i dont have a proper ecu for it. I cant find it anywhere , mine is a 96 d15b imported , its obd 2 , u can tell dual vtecs, or stage 3 vtecs as u call it, by havint 2 vtec solidids right next to each other

sup i got a small prob. i got a 91 crx and it cranked and ran fine to school and it was a lil harder to crank after school but about 1/4m. away from school while i was accelerating it back fired and then cut off and wouldn't start. it would turn over a thousand times and every once in a while it would crank but the second u try to accelerate or add gas it would stall and won't crank at all.

i have returned :D , The top speed in the d15z6 managed by my friend since i sold my car was 217km/h!!! and i bought the JDM B16A2 1999 167bhp :P and i moved on also ive bought a vortech charger @9psi + after cooler + injectors + fuel rail + forged pistons + omni valve train upgrade package+70mm throttle body+gauges +plx m300 sensor +soon to be AEM Ems or hondata still not sure which to get though and in a two months i'll be looking into NOs , but my knowledge has vastly improved. Anyways i come by to say hi and i got amazed that there were ppl still posting stuff in this forum. All i can say that d15z6 is a nippy little quick car or BTw it use to wiegh 965kg kerb wieght. My friend which currently owns it now doesnt stay far away from stock b16a2 civics. As for the stages in vtec i will neva know exactly but we can always theorize. ;) oh one more thing the Civic EX sohc(d16z6) many parts availabe from that car can be used with the d15z6

ok , i know this is a old thread but i'd like to add my input about the stage 3 vtec the jdm model which my friend own has two vtec spool on the intake manifold and not next to the distributor. the engine creates up to 130 psi at 72,000 rpm very well put together engine . this is fount in the ek3 sedan of 3dr hb.vti
