I just test drove the GTI 20th anniversary today and man it was badass. Very Very nice transmission. For the guy who was wondering which car to get think about one other thing, the transmission. VW's german roots great transmission 6speed(i think it is called getrag or something) same as the new BMW's. WRX is still using a transmission from like 1985. it feels kinda rubbery too. I have driven both. TO tell you the truth i dont know what i like better the great styling of the GTI or the raw perfomance of the WRX. I guess i should have just posted in the other guys thread. Woops.
Highs of the test drive: 1.8T engine delivered impressive power with the AC off. Couldnt hear the turbo too much inside the cockpit... i would fix that... blowoff valve CAI and such.... as stated before nice tranny... RECARO SEATS! very nice dashboard and console. lots of room in the back.(behind the back seats i mean) fun car to drive, lots of smiling. very nice handling by the way 4 wheel independent suspension nice! just me and my dad and no car dealers around man i screamed around some corners:icesangel
Lows: i scratched the bottom of the car on the way out of the dealer parking lot. Kind low.. but that is also good. Power delivery with the ac sucked until 3thousand rPMs. Nope not many lows.
BADASS CAR. Props to VW on this dream of a car.
:bigthumb:
anyone else feel the same way i do... have you test driven one... or own one?

This saturday me and my dad went out lookin at cars and ended up test drivin an '03 GTI 1.8T and i loved it. It wasn't the 20th anniversary, just the '03 so it was only the 5 speed but it was a fun lil ride. We had the windows rolled down so you could hear the faint whine of the stock turbo but like Myrrdex said, with a BOV and CAI you could hear that nice sound of a turbo. I loved the Leather seats w/ nice side bolsters and the telescoping steering wheel, never seen that in other cars. I would love to buy one of these but im about 20K short, lol. Great car though.

Hey Golfboy like in the other post you started you should be able to beat a 99-00 Civic Si cause you have what 180hp stock and the Civic Si's come w/ 160 so with equal drivers im guessing your GTI would win. However if he is a good racer and you aren't tht great the civic could prolly pull on you.

Ahh you would be right...i looked up 2001 GTI GLS 1.8t and it is 150hp. As you can tell i am just starting to get into GTI's, lol. But back to the question if you could beat a 99-00 Si i am not sure. I know that hp alone doesnt win races but u also have to look at different things. Your car has 150hp@5700rpm and 155tq@1950rpm weighing in at 2860lbs (all autotrader.com used car specs) while the 99-00 civic si is 160hp@7600rpm and 111tq@7000 weighing in at 2600lbs. Now it seems like you have the low-end numbers the but high revving Si has the high numbers which chould help...HOWEVER i think the torque could help u but in the end i think the Civic Si might pull ya. I am not sure though. Hell the easiest way....go race one, lol. Hope i was of SOME help.

Horse pwr means nothing if you can't drive :nono: it's all about knowing when to shift and how fast you can do it with out screwing up. :) Nothing worse or more embarrassing than an awesome takeoff from first and then you miss second gear as the other guy blows by you. :loser: Anyway, bought a 20th AE 2 days ago w/ 29miles and I love it. They were pretty sure it didn't even get a test drive which was nice seeing how some of you have been on your test drives. :evillol: I got mine for invoice which was nice and the difference between these and the regular GTI's is night and day. I had an 02 for a while before I gave it back to the dealer with turbo and wastegate problems. :banghead: The 6 spd is nice and smooth and vw did a nice job of getting rid of the rubbery slushiness associated with their 5 spd. Anyway, great car, seems like I'm driving an Audi b/c the interior feels very expensive which I love.

Test drove both 2 months ago. Bought the 20th AE the next day. I love it but it depends on which one is more fun to drive for you. That's ll that counts.

in response to can a 99-00 si beat the 20th ae umm no,this coming from the assumption that the 03 si is faster than the 99-00. since everyone is saying that the 03's are the best si's yet and in a test on car and driver or motor trend dont remember which they tested the new si, regular 150hp gti 1.8t, and the svt focus. the gti was faster in acceleration 0-60 0-100 and in 1/4 and their reveiw was it was significantly faster than the new si. so the 20th ae should be faster yet so the si cant hold up unless the drivers were unequal and time elevation if you wanna get into all that. basically the numbers say it shouldnt happen but anything is possible

well coincidentally, i also test drove one this morning... my friend, me and the dealer, 3 in the car, each of us over 180lbs... it wasnt an anniversary edition... but anyway here goes...
I was in the market for the WRX, even had all my mods, and tuning planned out, until i read a bit about the tranny... 12 year old design, too much box flex, gears breaking, etc... so I decided against it and just recently took a look at the GTI...
Well, it was no WRX on acceleration, but i saw potential, extremely smooth gear box, clutch softer than a marshmellow and very forgiving, hard to avoid spinning tires at launch tho :naughty:
but anyway drove it lightly a bit, then the dealer suggested taking a twisty route... well lets just say it needs some suspension work...
Acceleration was impressive up the twisty hill, even with over 600 lbs of body weight in the car, pulled strong, didnt FLY by any means, but pulled smoothly, chirped in 2nd, quite surprised at the amount of torque this thing has...
Handling? what handling? Its soft enough to sleep in there, too soft for my taste... it had plenty of body roll on turns, wasnt too nice... And wow, all that torque going to waste... shi**y suspension... no LSD... terrible tires... wheels slipped at every launch, and most turns while accelerating out...
Interior is beautiful, but whats the deal with the inside door handles? cheap plastic... doesnt fit in with the rest of the interior... just not as up to par as the rest of the materials... leather seats were nice and supportive, comfortable driving position, etc... everything was nice...
This one i drove was the 5-speed, with 17s, leather, sunroof, monsoon system, it was loaded with everything, even the ESP electronic tability Program... it was a 2003 discounted to 19,999, i would have bought it, had it been black with black leather, but it was silver with gray leather, haha
My final words... Luxurious interior, sufficient power with potential for more, nice body style, but lacks ability to put its power to the ground efficiently...
But thats easy to fix and shouldnt stop anyone from getting the car... I'll be getting mine soon.... and as far as suspension, Eibachs will do nicely, with some 17s or 18s with wide rubber...
oh btw, the SMOOTHEST 5-spd ive EVER driven, VERY VERY smooth shifter, Soft clutch, almost impossile to stall... also impossible to avoid spinning tires :)
