Hi,
I need to get a detailing done for my car.
What is involved in the process? Does it make sense to go to a dealer
or any car wash (with this service) suffice?
Also ... lemme know if you know of any good place to get it done in
San Jose (CA).

good question. . .
anyway, my car was detailed by the previous owner. it looks like they coated over the engine to make it shiny or something, but then after awhile is starts wearing away and flaking off. . . i never asked who did it, but he always went to the dealer for every little thing, so i guess he went there still. . .

:o) I have a 2001 325I ... Over the past 6 months I have not been cleaning it regularly. So the interiors are all dirty ... I thought detailing would be an enhanced version of the ususal hand car wash.
Wherein they would take their time to clean it up instaed of the ususal 15 mins.
Actually the exterior paint is in nice condition ...
Mainly I just need to get the interiors cleaned up properly.
Any suggestions?

My best suggestion to you popeye1947 is to do the detailing yourself. I can see that you appreciate you car and you don't want/won't accept anything less that the best. Unfortunately...even if you take your car to the dealership, they will not do as good a job as you would because of the simple fact...it's not their car...they don't give a hoot just as long as they do what the minimum is according to the shop in which they operate.
I've taken my car to many detailing shops and have always been disappointed...therefore...now...I do it myself and am always satisfied....and more knowledgable at the same time.

I have a new BMW that I love about like you probably love yours. Whatever you do...DO NOT SPRAY ANYTHING ONTO THE ENGINE!!!!!!! No no no no...I sprayed some of that stuff that makes the engine shine and it messed up all my sensors and locked the engine up. All BMWs have NUMEROUS sensors on the engine compartment. I had to have my car towed to the BMW dealership. Since >>I<< put the cleaner on my engine...I had to pay for the recker service and I had to pay to have my engine fixed (est $1,500.00). Also...because of this, BMW cancelled my warranty...now I have a new BMW with NO WARRANTY!!!!! :confused: :confused: try to sell this one??

i went to a local shop which does detailing.
they said they charge 180 for both outside and inside.
i don't mind doing it on my own ...
but there is a lot of dust/dirt on the corners etc.
not sure how i'll get it cleaned.
do you know of any kit which has all the stuff (cleaners) for cleaning it up?

This is exactly what you need...AND DO IT YOURSELF!!!!
Found at Autozone/Advanced Auto or any automotive store:
1-Power Clean Glass cleaner (blue/white aerosol can) $1.99
1-Tanners leather/vinyl cleaner/protectant (black aerosol can) $3.99
1-Gold Class car wax $9.99
Found at Wal-Mart:
1-Can of compressed air (found in electronics) $3.99...this is GRREAT to clean in all the tiny spots to remove dirt...just blow it out!

I had my 2001 325i detailed at the dealer and they did an AMAZING job.
The interior looked showroom-clean. Inside and out was $180.
They even removed some exterior scratches at no additional charge.
Maybe my dealer is particularly good (Peabody BMW, MA).

civic you sound like a dumbass. Working for IBM does not ensure anything. Do you remember their restructuring several years ago??? If someone wants to pay the price, that is their decision. Why are you so judgmental??? My suggestion would be to cruise over to meguiars.com and follow their instructions for auto detailing. Besides if you consider the number of hours involved in a REAL detailing $180 is not so outrageous.

my remarks were plainly out of shock for such an outrageous price paid for a detailing... I've paid $30-$40 dollars for a detailing but I believe $180 dollars to be a bit outrageous...
re: IBM... all companies restructure... especially in IT... you never made your point...
I apologize if my comments have offended you but that's what forums are for... commenting...
