A friend of mine has a 98 Ranger and her check engine light has been on. She went today and got new tires and someone told her she was leaking oil. That it was the cap behind the crankshaft...could that be it??

u need to provide more info here.

CE light been on since she bought it or ?

how many miles?

there's so many variables on what might be causing the engine light to come on, when it does come on, its trying to tell u something is wrong.

as far as the oil leak, did she physically see the leak? if it is really leaking, its probably a seal or gasket.

the leak would not cause the ce light to come on.

The light came on about a week ago. She has about 73,000 miles on the truck. And yes you can see leak which is around the crank shaft.

My check engine light came on, on my 98 Ranger. I went to Auo Zone for a free codes check. The scanner indicated a P0171 code which indicates a possible problem with the O2 sensor causing the #1 cylinder mixture to run lean. I will test the O2 sensors to see if the low voltage is present (0.35-0.55 volts). O2 sensor must be above 600 degrees to show this voltage. Hopefully this will reveal some kind of problem with the sensors. Engine has 110,000 miles on it.
