Double clutching

I know I know. Cars have synchros and I don't need to, but I wanted to see if I could get some things cleared up about shifting. Am I correct that you would only double-clutch on downshifts, not upshifts?

No, double de-clutching is for downshifts. If you're using a crashbox and you don't want it to grind, you have to double clutch every time you change a gear (except for going into first from a stop) -or speedshift-

But when upshifting, you don't blip the throttle in Neutral, correct? Thats just to speed up the transmission to the new gear speed, which would only apply when downshifting. Upshifting is a double-clutch, downshifting is a double declutch with a throttle blip in Neutral?

I've never blipped the throttle when shifting to first (Subaru 360 has unsynced 1st gear) of course this is usually because I come to a stop before engaging it.

Yep, you would not tap the accelerator during halfway through double-clutching on an up shift because you would want the engine and the transmission input shaft to slow down slighty to match the higher gear speed. I don't think its really necessary to double-clutch during upshifting unless you really, really care about your synchros (....but Im not even sure if the synchros even get that much wear during upshifting unless you drive a race car).

I've just been practicing double-clutching on upshifting and double-declutching on downshifting for the past two days. Man, is it fun!

Yeah i've seen that link before. Right now, I'm trying to put my double clutching together with my heel-toe. I can only do them separately for now.

It does take time to learn & definately wont come over night. The right pedals can be very helpful. Not some cheap pedal cover's. Try upshifting/downshifting with out using the clutch :bigthumb:

Yeah my momo pedals work good. I do know how to upshift without the clutch but prefer not too. I think this is more suited to a muscle car that has more of an indestructable gearbox and can take the added stress. Power downshifting is just plain stupid, its not gonna make you any faster and has a higher chance of messing up the revs and grinding your gearbox.
I think a well-executed single/double clutch upshift or double clutch downshift will be overall faster than power shifting, sound cooler, and certainly put less pressure on the drivetrain. To each his own, I suppose.
I just wish everyone on this site actually understood the differences between all the types of shifting - rev matching, double clutch, power shifting, heel-toe etc. And if I have to listen to another rice-boy talk about how he feathers the clutch to get his Vtec to come on, I'm gonna go berzerk. Thats not how it works folks.

You make yourself sound like you know everything, and everyone else... stupid... exactly who do you expect to answer your question??

No I don't fully understand everything, there are better experts here. But there are also lots of people who propogate misinformation on shifting. I just would like it if there was a FAQ or something on this site to clear up the issue once and for all.
