i bought this jeep used its an 85 cherokee 2.5L 4cyl gas. it ran fine for a while but one day it wouldnt crank. i hit the starter solenoid with a hammer (which sometimes fixes the problem as a first resort) but nothing happened. then about a week later it cranked and drove like nothing was wrong. it did it again 3 days ago. today i replaced the starter and STILL NOTHING!!! lights go on and everything. my friend thinks its a faulty ground but i don't know what the hell it could be but im almost sure its electrical. what do you all think? thanks

have you checked to see if your getting spark? next thing i would check, is to see if your getting fuel as well. just wondering to, where did you get your starter from?

i got the starter at autozone. it was 80 dollars plus 30 dollars core if you dont bring in the old one in, but if you want to wait, you can get your 30 dollars back at any autozone if you return the old starter.
theres fuel in the filter so it looks like its gettin to the chamber. if it were the plugs i would think that the starter would at least spin the flywheel until it was time for them to fire at least, but nothing. i replaced the ground wire today but that did nothing.
im going to put in a new ignition switch and hot wire tonight and see if that does it.

Jump a wire between the + battery cable and the terminal on the starter with the small wire. This will bypass the ignition switch. The motor won't start when you jumper it this way unless the key is turned to the on position. You can do this from the bottom side. Just make sure it isn't in gear because this also bypasses the neutral safety switch. Hope this info helps.
