C'mon guys, this is no way to promote the hobby to a younger generation.

First off, Welcome hondaaccordboy21!

Well, first you should try using the search box in the upper right hand corner of the page here as was recommended already..

Second, and most important, thoroughly read the instructions, at least two times. You'll get to know your brush a little better.

Again, welcome and good luck!

I'd also say that you may want to practice on scrap pieces and such just to get the hang of it.

I just hope you have a compressor because you'll waste a lot of air cans! :icon16: :icon16: :icon16:

There's only a select few people in the world that are 13 and have a positive IQ anymore, namely EMAXX and a few others. There should be a test that people have to take that measures IQ, and if it is lower than a certain number, membership should be denied. It just seems like people are staying stupid for a longer time than a couple years ago.

Basically, if you're too stupid to understand the above statement and are above the age of 13, choose another hobby such as sucking your thumb, or picking your nose.

That was crude, but what should I expect coming from a 15 year old?

Welcome to the hobby, bud, and cool to hear that you got an airbrush already at 13. I understand why you're asking for some help with it, as they can be intimidating, especially if you haven't really seen how they're used before.

There's several types of airbrushes available, and each will be used somewhat differently. So, as mentioned, your best bet is to read the instruction manual that should have come with it.

Also, remember that good maintenance of your airbrush is the key to getting good results everytime. Make sure you clean it thoroughly after every use, with a cleaner compatable with the type of paint you used. You should be able to find that info on this board somewhere. Use the search function, as mentioned. Best of luck to ya!

Sorry about earlier, I just get annoyed when people don't search before asking something. Oh well, I used to be that way too, so I can't whine too much.

The only airbrushes I have used were double action, internal mix so if you need to, modify the following for whatever you have.

Basics: Internal mix, double action airbrushes are recommended by most people because they atomize the paint into finer droplets and also allow you to control the amount of air AND paint. For most paints, you thin them with the proper thinner until they are the consistency of milk. If you don't already have a compressor, get one, it will save you a lot of money by not having to buy and $8-9 can of propellant the will only last for one car. Second, practice on pieces of cardboard or paper until you find the right technique that works for you. If the airbrush is double action, you push the trigger down to control the air flow and pull it back to control the amount of paint that sprays out.

Cleaning: All you need to do for cleaning is spray some lacquer thinner through the brush until you don't see any dried paint spraying out. SOAK the remaining parts in the lacquer thinner then wipe them out with a paper towel and then wash them with some water.

Do a search on Google or Yahoo for airbrush tutorials. The tutorials will cover basic techniques and most of them have a few little tricks that can add to a custom paint job.

I have another point of view here too. The FAQ is good, but it's not the be all end all of modelling information. People do things differently, and there are several new people here - who knows, you just might learn something. Not a flame, not bitching at anyone, just stating my opinion.

Hondaaccordboy, welcome to AF! Ahhh, the days of youth and the first airbrush......I'm too old to admit how long ago that was. Any specifics on which airbrush you have? Testors makes several. Do you need specific instructions or the general things like "how much do I thin the paint"? Most of the guys here will be happy to help - even if some do seem to have a bit of an attitude (good or bad  ).

Again, welcome to AF!

Welcome to AF.
There are books about how to use airbrush, so it can't be explained so easily.
Try finding the model number of your airbrush, because there are several types, and suggestions and advice can be more specific, if we know it.

The basics of using an airbrush is to know the appropriate mixing ratio of paint and thinner, distance to the object and air pressure.

Maintaining the distance and pressure, try playing around with different mixing ratios on a scrap cardboard, until paint doesn't run or create a spider web. (Paint run = too thin, spider web = too thick)

Then, learn how the distance affects. Spraying too close to the object causes a risk of paint run, while spraying too far results in a coarse surface texture.

Air pressure is usually constant, but lowering the pressure let you get close to the object for a hair line like drawing, while increasing the pressure allows you to spray from a distance to cover a large area uniformly.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot books!

Kalmbach publishes a VERY good book on airbrushing "How to Use an Airbrush" by Bob Downie (one of the best model painters to be found!). You should be able to get it from your local hobby shop (assuming you have one) or from a number of places online.

It's a great reference for airbrush use!

Also, there's a magazine out too. "Airbrush Action" caters to airbrush users, though not directly to modellers. Steve Boutte (another great painter) has has some stuff published by them, so they do cover models!
