How do you program a ford ignition key that has a chip in it? The dealer wants $21 for the key and $75 to program it. That's rediculous! Any help or alternatives would be appreciated.

I read up on it in the manual, but I only have one key. The manual says you must have 2 keys. I don't see why! It's not as if the dealer is going to connect it to a computer.

I am new to this board and I come in with request for help.......Sorry..

I have the same problem, I have 2 programmed keys and a third not programmed. I had a remote start installed and they had to use one of my programmed key under the dash in the bypass. My wife left the programmed key at her parents when she was there on vacation and I want to avoid this mess again. The remote start does not always work,,,(cold mournings mostly)...

Problem is I don't have the owners manual..

Can some one help me PLEASE ?????

Yep. This system is real generic. You MUST have 2 working keys to program. There's just no way around it. The car needs to "see" 2 working keys in order for it to "unlock" or be ready to learn the new code on the new key.

Take one old key and turn the ignition on for about 3 sec.. Then do the same with the other old key. Then turn the ignition on with the new key and leave it on for about 10 sec.. MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT HAVE ANY OF THE KEYS NEXT TO EACH OTHER DURING PROGRAMMING. If you do, you won't be able to program it.

garrett, you may or may not be able to do this with the remote start. I would remote start it until the light goes out then use the old key then try the new key. Hope this helps and answers your questions.

RE: FORD TAURUS 2000 PROGRAMMING WITH ONLY 1 KEY! I JUST DID it this worked....I have a remote start....start with the remote, theft light goes off, insert the 1 key that you have, start untilt theft light goes off, then insert Dummy key for 10 seconds... Your dummy key will be programmed saving you and me the $75!!!

If you don't have a remote start, buy one for $100, and forget the $75 you'll waste for programming a new key!!! Remote starts are nice to warm or cool a car!

1. You say start with the remote start

Do you then turn the engine OFF befor inserting the one good key and restart? Then turn off and insert the new key?.

Thanks

I recently had the same problem...only one key and needed another. Similarly, local dealerships wanted $30 for the key and $80-100 for coding. Luckily, I called a general locksmith and they happened to have the coding machine and didn't charge such outrageous prices.

I live in the New Orleans area and the locksmith place gave me a key and did the programming for $75. In my search for a decent price I also found a dealership in a small town about 70 miles north of New Orleans who would have done the whole thing for $60.

My suggestion...call, call, and call around more until you find the best deal!

YEs, after you have it remote start, shut it off after a few seconds, insert your working key and turn it "on" but not running untill you hear it ding and the security light flash on the dash. When it does that, shut it off and insert your new key and turn it on, after the beep, start it. You should be done. If it doesn't work, try it again or refer to your owner's manual. It will be the same just that you'll use your remote start as the "first key". :iceslolan

I called around and found a dealer that sold me a programmed key for $40 and they only wanted $20 for a programmed 2nd key. So I bought 2. $64 with tax.
