Aussie teens are tops at mating

Teenagers in Australia are among the most sexually active in the world, a report released on Monday showed.

The country also has the sixth-highest teenage pregnancy rate in the developed world, and abortions are now the second most common reason young women are admitted to hospital.

The report's author, Rachel Skinner from the University of Western Australia, said teenagers are having sex first and thinking about the consequences later.

"It's perhaps not surprising that half of adolescent pregnancies occur in the first six months of sexual activity," Skinner said.

She advocated sexual education programmes in schools as the best way to cut teenage pregnancy rates. - Sapa-DPA
