VTC solenoid?

Hey all do any of you know wat the VTC solenoid looks like or where it is in the engine bay ? and is it safe to disconnect it ?
and wat exactly does the VTC solenoid do ?

the VTC is on the front of the motor, under the timing chain cover. it controls the variably timed intake cam.
