Problem with my 98 civic, alternator I think...

Driving back from a camping trip, my "CHECK emission systems" light came on, my speedometer stop functioning, and my head and tail lights started flickering. I stopped and changed my alternator fuse and the secong one didn't even last 1 second. Is it my alternator spiking? Should I just change the alternator myself instead of bringing into a garage or should I get it checked out? Has this ever happen to anybody? Is this a common problem?
I use an eliminator in my ACC outlet (transforms it into an ordinary household plug) this weekend, could that have been the source of the problem?
Thanks

It is quite possible that the AC Converter surged the power depending on what you plugged into it. What I, personally, would do is take it to a shop have it diagnosed and see if it is the alternator or whatever. If it is the alternator you can change it yourself like you said. another reason why the other fuse didn't work is b/c you don't want to touch it with your bare hands. Try changing the fuse again but use your shirt or some gloves or something. Good Luck on fixing it.
