Hi everyone. Hope all is well.

Could somebody please advise if the 1995 BMW 740il, was plagued with engine problems and was part of the engine replacement recall? Or, did it start in 1996?

Many thanks for the advice.

Destin, from all the research I did on mine before I bought it, the years affected were 95-late 96, if I remember correctly. If you would like to know the condition of your engine, have someone(or DIY) perform a cylinder compression leakdown test. I remember finding info all over the net about this problem. The coating inside the cylinders was rapidly eaten away by high sulfur gasolines causing the engines to die. A rough idle is one of the first signs. Do some Google searches for "1995 bmw 740i Nikasil problems" and see what comes up. I believe this is what I used. Believe it or not, most folks don't know about the problems, me either, until the SALESMAN told me!! There are a few good ones out there. He had the service dept do the check prior to me buying it and had the mechanic and service manager sign and date the results on the work order. Good luck, Brad

Brad -

I really apperciate the info..

So, bottom line is, 1997 models to present are ok?

Also, what are and are not acceptable levels/results of this cylinder compression leakdown test?

1997 to present models are good models, just the 1998 models, it had a couple problems with the heating core with the AC systems, but the best of the 7-series was the 2001 models, which had no recalls wut so ever, bcuz they were all fixed by BMW. I had a new 2001 BMW 740i Sport as my 1st car and it was well worth it, so if ur interested, then take a look at the 2001 models:wink:

Deatin, Here's one of the sites I got my info from.

15% is the max allowable. I don't know if a mere compression check will tell if you have a problem, but the specs from BMW are 175-205 psi. Good luck, Brad
