What car should I buy ?

I'll work next year in the USA and will surely buy a car at about USk$10-12 that I'll sale before I leave.
But I don't know what to buy. I'd like to buy a slow car, because I wouldn't be able to respect the very slow speed limits out there. A car which wouldn't be sporty at all.
What would you conseil me ?

It would be a second hand with less than 60 000 miles and not too old (after 1998).

Thanks for your advices ;)

.... And if you know how to drive at a normal speed without being disturbed by the cops, I could bring my car there !

Where will you be working and for how long? The road conditions are quite different depending on location and time of the year.

I don't know yet. It'll be for 6 or 12 months in 2004-2005. For the state, I like California and NYC, so I'll try do work there, but I'm not sure.
Though, everywhere in the USA, people drive very vrey slow and if you drive faster, you've the cops behind you. :(
... and alas, I don't think it's different in some States, if not, tell me !

another question : if I go there with my car (the 406 or the 156), with French plates, will I avoid some control and will I be able to drive faster ? because 70mph on an highway, I wound'nt be able to do it !!! except maybe with an American car ? so my question ! ;)

I don’t know why you keep saying you need a slow car tp drive here. You already have slow cars.

If you’re only going to be here for 12 months or less and you are in LA or NY (city) then I suggest public transportation. If you’re going to be in a smaller town then getting a used several year old Gulf, Civic or Neon will probably fit your bill.

"My" cars are slow ?..... ok, have you ever driven an Alfa, a Peugeot or a Citroën ? I don't think so.
My personnal car is the 156 with "only" 120hp indeed. But I worth 180 american hp ! The 406 makes 138hp, same thing, the Evasion 110hp. All these cars go over 115mph. And the behaviour of the car is the most important, a Peugeot handles better than everything in its category, the 156 is almost as good, even if it's less comfy. And the Evasion is far much better than a Voyager for example.
I had a Golf III and I didn't want to drive too fast, but with the Delta that I had after that (15hp less powerfull), I drove faster.

So I hope you understood what I said, because a little explaination was needed.

I don't really want to use the public transport and to live in the US without a car.
Neon, Golf, Civic ?.... mhhh, nothing else, more exclusive ? even a big american car, it would be funny. Concorde ? Town Car ? etc ?

A Towncar, Concorde or Cadillac would be a nice ride, but a whole lot faster and more powerful then your cars. It sounded like you wanted something with a little amount of power. Buying a large luxury car won't fit that bill.

I have driven a Peugot. Wasn't impressed. A mere 150hp is not very powerful at all. You are obviously happy with it and thats a good thing. My Shadow EX has more horsepower and weighs less. It'll walk past your cars like they were standing still and I consider it to be a slow car. That is why I question your calling an American Car "slow".

Even with a lot of horsepower, the comportement, the behaviour of most American cars, is very slow, doesn't push you to go fast. And with the poor handling of these cars, you won't want to dirve fast !
You tried a 405 Mi16 ? this car was quite heavy and the engine not sporty, but enough to drive well. Though, the performances of the 406 2.0 138hp are about the same, and it weighs more. And the 405 Mi16 for the USA was less good because of its changed suspensions.
Compare comparable things, a 156 1.6 120hp is much better than a Stratus 2.0 for example. Of course, the 1.6 TS is not very powerfull, but it's a engine very nice to drive. And that's very important, more than the pure performances. Of course, if I could have afford a 156 2.0, or diesel (jtd 2.4) or even a V6, I would have bought it, and at this price I could have had a Clio RS 172hp, but I'm not searching perfomances, because my insurance would be very expensive and I would lose my drivers licence quickly. With the Alfa, I'm always 20 to 100 kmh over the speed limit, don't wnat to imagine with a Clio RS, Civic Type R, etc.... ;)
So my car is not a sport car, but with this engine you want to accelerate, I didn't feel the same at all when I tried a Stratus 2.0(in France), and a Camaro V6 (in the USA), though, both were manuals !

Do you understand what I mean ??
