im trying to figure out which transmission i should get. ive never driven a manual before, but most people tell me that its much much better than an automatic, as far as performance and general fun. the cvt really intrigues me though, and i was wondering if anyone has tried both or either?

the general fun part is totally opinion...if it was a bmw or a honda, the manual tranny would be a must, cause those companies make sweet transmissions. nissan makes great engines, but their trann'y aren't all that great. so if you want to have an imprecise, notchy gearbox, in exchange for a little extra giddyup, go for it. personally, i always like to choose my own gears. but many people don't like the 6 speed because it is by no means smooth

do yourelf a favor.. go rent a 5 speed manual vehicle for a week or two.. so what, dump a couple of hundred on a 4.6 mustang from budget. learn on that bitch.. that's what i did.. i've been driving manual for the past 10 years and i wouldn't change it for an auto.. unless it was free of course.

If you do get auto make sure you get the 5spd auto and not the 4spd. From what I hear the 5spd is also has the manualmatic mode. Oh I would also suggest reading this weeks auto week they have a review of the 04 Max and it talks about the transmition a little.

the 5 speed auto only comes on the '04...which is a bit porky in my opinion

There is a 4spd option from what I read. It on the base model and its 0-60 is 6.7 because of the tranny.
