How much will 17''s slow me down?

How much slower will my 1/4 or 0-60 times be with 17''s as opposed to stock 15''s?

Well this was published in Grassroots Motorsports last year.

1lb of wheel weight is equal to about 8-10lbs static body weight. My 15x7" wheels and 205/50x15" Azenis weigh 34lbs whereas my old 17s (Konig Toxxins) with 205/40x17" Yokhama A520s weighed 45lbs each. That's 10lbs per corner for a total of 40lbs of wheel/tire weight. 40lbs * 8-10lbs = 320-400lbs of static body weight.

Do the math and you can see :)

Take my car for instance:
2500lbs w/my 15s = 15.15 second 1/4 mile
2540lbs w/my 17s = 15.36 and that doesn't include the change in gear your car will have with 17s. 205/40x17" is about .1-.2" larger in diameter.

Thanks a lot, very helpful. But opinion-wise, i shoudlnt be worried about losing performance if i buy 17''s over my stock 15''s then right? It seems to be only .3-.5 seconds difference, and i think i can handle that.

That's a pretty noticable difference though. I think you will hit yourself afterwords if you buy 28lb rims. A 19 or 20lb rim wouldn't be that bad though. Oh, just for shits and gigles I weighed my stock 14in steelies with the tires and they are 36lbs so if you can stay near that weight, you'll be good. It would suck to get beat by a stock Integra when your car looks so nice.

Does anyone know how much 5zigen corpse or Racing Hart Evo C5's are in 17''s?

If they weigh too much than i guess ill go with some rota grids.

But seriously, how come so many people get 17''s when it affects performance so much? I wouldnt think it would be bad enough to where you get beat by your car stock.

You also forget that a 17" rim the weight is further out from the center of the hub which means it takes more energy. That calculator doesn't figure that in AND the diameter of the overall setup is larger which means it lengthens the gearing which also slows down the car.

what about konig tantrums? or how about ADR sokudo 8's

my friends car has 15" rims from a 2000 LS, my hatch has 17"sokudo 8's and his car is about a second faster,

so it would have to be about 1k pounds more, so about 25 pounds heavier at each corner, now I doubt they are that much heavier but I think im gonna put the 14's on the fron and then steal the 15's from the parts car for the rear and race him again.

5zigen 5ZR Copse in 17" are 23.0lbs, (but this doesn't make any sense cause the 15's are supposedly 11lbs)? If your serious about these, I would call 5Zigen and see what they say.

Racing Hart Evo C5's are about 21lbs. Not sure cause the nearest size I could find the weight for was 18x8.5. They were 28lbs.

Konig Tantrum 17x7's are 19.2lbs

The reason people put giant wheels on their cars is either because they don't think that it can slow you down, or they just want to look cool and get the ladies. Also, some people actually do their homework and buy a set that is very light, so it doesn't affect the performance.

Konig Helium are very light.
Buddy Club PL Racing SF are very light / expensive
Arospeed wheels are very light
Racing Hart CP-035R are probably my favorite wheel ever
SSR Competition are incredible!

Such as expensive ass TE37's :D

Thanks for all the help bro, do you happen to know of any other lightweight 17''s that you would recomend?

cool, cuz my last teg had tantrums and I was hoping to go with them but have found them for not much cash so i figured they'd be heavy, but 19 pounds sounds pretty light for 17's to me. what does a stock 15 weight without tires?

I'm not sure. I've seen a lot of different numbers. Anything from 15.7lbs to 22lbs. So who knows?

Wow. Great link, but depressing. My wheels are friggin 27.5 lbs!!!! Those 23in Enekeis at the bottom were 60lbs though! Just think about all those dudes wit 24's and spinners (double rims) Those must be like 70lbs each!!!!

I saw a 03 Maxima this weekend with 20in spinners, they must've been about 45lbs! Then there was a 03 V6 Altima with the same rims right behind him. I shold've tried to race the Altima. Maybe those rims slowed him down enough where I can beat him!

No  man, you probably seriously could have. If it was an 03 V6 Auto w/ 20 inch 50 lb wheels [+tire weight], i dont see how he could win.

Yeah but realize that it take torque to get these wheels going, which most Hondas DON'T have. It still will suck away at the performance of a car.

They have spinner hubcaps at Pep Boys now too I saw in an ad. LMAO! :dogpile: :loser:

But imagine how much 90lbs. wheels (with the tires on them) must do to the hubs and knuckles of those cars, even the SUVs. :bloated:

Konig has some new 17" Heliums. Theyre light but then again, the 15s would be even lighter so it doesnt make sense to go big. A guy named NuEra made a thread like this but it went on forever, I couldnt find it but you could do a search. Good luck with your decision.
