Replace gear shift to transmission cable 86 735

I have an '86 735 BMW and need to replace the cable from the automatic transmission to the gearshifter. Can anyone please tell me how to access the transmission cable. Do you need to remove the center console, if so how? or does the wood trim around shifter can be removed>
