power steering

ive heard that disconnecting the belt from the power steering frees up some parasitic loss resulting in more HP but how much power are we talking about?

Also, is it bad for the pump or anything else to leave it off temporarily?

Can be done, but its not a lot of power. Maybe 2-5hp, max. Itd be hard to turn the wheel, esp at low speeds, so its probably not worth it. They do sell underdrive pulleys, which basically send less power to the pump. I think its a better comprimise than removing the belt entirely.

hahaha! i heard this too from sport compact car mag. i changed my timing belt and when i had my belts off, i decided to keep 'em off--a/c and power steering. obviously, i had to put my alternator belt back on. and yes, i did get stronger. no no no, not my car. my arms. what a pain in the butt! most people will never realize what a blessing PS is! to make a long story short, i got tired of taking 10 minutes to back into my parking space at home for only a tenth of a point of horsepower. really, it isn't noticeable one whit. keep it on--it'll make your life better!

I have a friend with a 96 eclipse, He did that and tested his can without power steering, or A/C, and his car gained a good 10-12 wheel horsepower, just off that. I guess it comes down to weather of not you will drive the car everyday. If you don't than go for it. If you do then definetly keep them on. If you choose to take them off though, I suggest that you would take out the entire unit, both the A/C and Power steering.

if your cars light enough it's not to bad my car never came with it and i'm cool but with a heavier car i wouldn't do it pullies would be better for you.
