Oxygen sensor positionning

I noticed when changing my O2 sensor that there are two slots cutted in it's tip that goes into the exhaust.Is it necessarry that these two slot faces the exhaust gas stream?

I do not believe so, just that it is in place is all that is necessary. At least my manual says nothing about which way it should face.
