Timing belt jumped?

I let my friend drive my car, big mistake. He used nos in first gear at 2k rpms. Engine backfired and died. Afterwords, the car had trouble idling. Also pressing the gas even a little made the engine rev to 4-5k rpms automatically. Car was diagnosed and they said it was timing belt. Could it be that? It's expensive and takes a lot of time to do it yourself. And how do i get the 'timing' correct again if i do it myself. plz help

Thats why you dont let other people drive your car or ride your bikes. I would pull the head off & check everything for cracks, bent valves, etc. Then I would worry about setting the timing.
Its not expensive it all if you do it yourself - dealer charges 4-5hrs of labor + parts for t/belt replacement - Good time to replace the water pump while your in there.

Wouldnt it be easier just to do a compression check? I think that should see if there's any cracks or bent valves... :biggrin2:

Sure you could do a compression test.
If it were my car, the head would come off & inspected. Might as well port & polish w/ valve job while its off
