Just got a 86 or 87 crx for free :bigthumb:
Anyways, not sure what year it is, but it's badged as an Si... I thought that the Si's had EFI, but this one doesn't appear to be fuel injected...
My plans are either to make it full-on race (straight pipes, no cat, resonator, or muffler, etc.), or fix it up and sell it... or just sell it as is for a couple hundred.
What kind of engine swaps can I do on this? Would prefer direct bolt-in swap...
Anyways, here's some pics:

Nice car for free:bigthumb:
I dont think that is a real Si, check the VIN# 9th character
Canada -- H='86 I='87
USA -- I='86 J='87
Model code = 8th character in the VIN
I think 6 is Si
1st digit // 1=USA 2=Canada // J=Japan
If its a real Si, I say restore it back to its original state. Some day that will be a collectors car. Could you imagine early CRX's & Civic's going through the barret jackson auction selling for $50,000+. That may happen 20, 30, 50 years down the road, the money then will be a cool million.
If its not an Si strip it, cage it, & race it! No lights, horns, heater, radio . . . 1seat, steering wheel, shifter, & some pedals -- all lightweight body work. Now if only CRX's were RWD, how about a full S2000 RWD swap/mod?
Wait how much money do you plan on spending?

As little as possible.
I plan to strip the interior like you suggested. I also want to do an engine swap, but I would prefer something that would be a direct bolt-in so I don't have to get mounts and all that crap. I just don't know what engines fit or are worthwhile...
I don't care what the car looks like, I just want it to be fast. So, I plan on running straight pipes, no cat or muffler, and a cold-air intake setup of some sort... maybe a ram-air setup?
There's some rust on the passenger side quarter panel that I'll have to cut out, and might make some fiberglass fender flares to cover that up...

Probably just drag. I may end up in some auto-cross, but for now, I'd rather just run the 1/4 mile and see how fast I can make it on a budget.

for drag & more tuning options you will want DOHC. I say go with a ZC DOHC.
B18A1 - bolt in(air intake clearence problem on CRX)
D16 - bolt in
ZC DOHC or SOHC - bolt in

here's alittle something i wrote on another forum
alot can be done for cheaper that B series stuff. it's just too far out of reach for me... here's a few options and all hp stuff is guess-tamated
you could run a carb set up and get from 130hp streetable to short bursts up to 200hp with tuning. all this with a ew motor NA
again with a stock setup you could nos or turbo a stock d15a3 due to it's low stock comp. i've been told a a3 could hold 50 shot wet and if you managed right... you could up it! with this set up your talking nearly 175 to the wheels. tuned correctly and not very streetable.
the hybrid head swap with a ew block and 86-87 dohc tegie head, rummored to make alot more power than stock
then you get to the 86-87 integra motor, it bolts right in no prob. you can do both of the above to this application, though, the teg has a higher comp than the a3
also there is a true ZC avialable in canada and europe, it's 130 stock and can be tuned well above. these are a pain to get but well worth it. this motor cam in carbed/EFI and both SOHC and DOHC, so take your pick. we allways got the shaft on motor opions and availablity here in the us.
then the B-thing, if i did this i'd prob do the 18 bottom with a 16 top. it's supposed to have 160's, but that's all hear say with no real research.
also note if your gonna B-it, you'll have to get all that power to the ground, so that means 1000 in suspention stuff! koni yellow's with GC coil over (400-600lb springs) 25-29mm Tbars
what's your flavor

Well, I'm a bit confused...
I'm used to the 4th generation civic terminology because I've been modding my 90 Si hatchback for a while now. So, when you say ZC, is it the same ZC for 4th gens? Or is there a 3rd gen ZC engine also? Plus, jackasssi mention in his post above that a ZC would be a direct bolt-in... If that's the ZC for the 4th-gens, wouldn't that mean that a 4th gen d-series engine would bolt right in as well (since I know that the 4G ZC engine bolts right into the d-series mounts in a 4th gen)?
Also, what is the clearance issue with the B18A1? Is it with the hood or the fire-wall or what? also, is the B18A1 the 86-87 teg motor?
I like the idea of getting the 86-87 teg motor... is that MPFI? What tranny would I need? What ECU would I need?
Anyone have any links to any engine-swap how-to's? I'm only interested in direct bolt-ins...

the 4th gens are a pain in the asss cause of the electronic dis
you can get a 86-87 teg ls or zc with the crx 1st gen an use your stock ecu or use the ls ecu 86-87. your best bet is to get a donor car cause you can swap to 4 wheel disc.
ecu
axle knckles
axles
half shaft
an rear block an tranny mounts drivers eng mnt is the stock 1.5

SO, if I got the teg ls (86-87) engine, what tranny should I use? The one from the teg?
Also, would I need the teg axles?
And, are you saying that the stock mounts won't work except for the driver-side engine mount?

use the ls tranny out of the 86-87 teg the one the motor came with.
you do need the axles and the intermediate shaft from the 86-87 teg yyou also need the hubs from the teg86-87.
the mounts from the crx you need the drivers side engine mount 86-87, andthe other 2 r from the teg 86-87.
the main problem i forsee is that your car is carberated, an you have to swicth some of your fuel system an some wiring.
RPR,Boman, LEW,and Gasoline Fumes may have a better discription of the things you have to do . I also would suggest RPR forum (Red Pepper Racing) but I have been unable to log on to it. I have a faq that had every thing you need but my old computer died a week ago an lost everything on it I hope this is helpin.

yea, tom's movin and the site's been down a week now. it will be up soon though.
note, a teg motor is not a true ZC, the look similar but are not exactly the same. a 86-87 teggie's d16a1 has about 112hp where as, the true ZC had 130. the ZC your looking for from you favorite importer would be a brown top ZC. it must have the valve cover bolts on the side, if not it is a usdm d16a1. the teggie has bolts on top.
i say carbs, do with what you've got! the carb setups make way more power than a d15a3 87si motor ever would. side drafts, head, header, 2.5 exsaust with a wiff of nos would push 200hp to the wheels. now that's what i'm talking about!!!
