Crx Turbo?

Just a few questions for you guys, i just bought a 1990 crx si today, im not real familar with hondas'. I planned on turbocharging it, i already have the essentials. What type of motor does my car have, and is it a good motor to turbo? If not what would be an affordable cheap swap?

sell the crx and buy a 90-94 dsm turbo car ..

i would say for turbo in a crx go with a ls motor lower compression is always better for turbo.Still tho you cant boost more then 10psi casue the internal can't handle it..
as for parts you will need..
turbo
exhaust manifold
downpipe
exhaust
piping
intercooler
450cc+injectors
upgraded fuel pump
s-afc
ect..
you get the idear.

The motor that is currently in your car is a D16A6- 113hp stock. I'd swap the motor for a b18 or a b16.
Here's a list of decent motors-
6th gen and below
cvic motors
99-00 Si B16A2 - 160hp @ 7600 rpm
97 + type R B16B - 184hp @ 7800 rpm
92- 95- 96 + Si R 2 & vti B16A - 168hp @ 7800 rpm
90-91 Si R B16A1 - 160hp @ 7600 rpm
89-92 Vti B16A1 - 158hp @ 7600 rpm
89-92 Si R Hatch B16A - 158hp @ 7600 rpm (you can tune early ZC's pretty well also) also the crx si-R and del sol 92 to 96 came with a 168 hp b16a and 94 to 97 the del sol came with an b16a3 with 158 hp.

97-98 2000 type R B18C5 - 195hp @ 8000 rpm the model of this motor made in japan is 197hp and it goes 95 and up.

I say swap also, but the d16a6 is a very nice motor..IMO probably the best D-series motor honda built.
My buddy had a custom turbo kit on his crx with the stock d16a6....
with 9lbs he was putting 190 to the wheels and running high 13's, best of 13.6 and all on street tires

I also say the D16 is a really good motor to turbo charge when built right. But If you are lookign for max performance I would also recommend a swap. For a turbo charge motor id go with a b16, if you wanted to build a all motor car then go with a b18. H22's are awsome motors, but as far as fitting it in yoru crx would be a major pain. Good luck man.

Switch the two B-series motors around. If you want to go turbo, the b18b1 is the best option. It can handle up to twelve psi without messing with the internals. It's long gear ratios also help spool the turbo, and it has low compression better suited for turbo apps. For all motor, b16. With a '90 CRX, I think you'd want the jdm b16 SiR I. Correct me if I'm wrong. It has 170 hp, can rev to 8200 rpms, and has a great-flowing head. A b16 swap would be about $2300. A boosted b18 would probably run you $4000+, but you could get 230 whp easily with 8 psi (thanks, PWMAN!).

Ahhh, building the motor is a beautiful thing. I plan on doing a B18 sometime in the next couple of years. I've found a company that gives some prices to think about:

Not sure if their pricing is reasonable, but I've got a local shop that can probably do all of this for me. The normally deal with drag cars, so I'm sure they're more than capable.

Truthfully you can build up any motor for a turbo some are more suited than others, like the b16a has better runners a better head for a turbo motor among other things, but any motor should have internal work b/f running any amount of boost. Shure honda Internals are built strong, but lets not lead ppl into the realm of blown motors. As for the 90 SiR B16A it has 160 hp at 7800 rpm's (and the rest of the SiR's have 168 hp, except for one of the civic hatch's with 158 *hybrid listed them all above*). Oh yea and b18b1's are cheaper than dirt, you can pick one up at your local salvage yard for 200 bucks. Damn CJ your slackin. :iceslolan

i have been saving money and have about $4,000 saved......(around) the 22nd of Aug i will be getting a bonus from work for $2,000. what should i do with the money? i know i want the engine swap (what kind im not sure).....any opinions? should i think about a turbo maybe?......any opinions. thanks

Get a built motor first, THEN turbo. It's so nice to have patience and do things right, then have to worry about it every time you run the car down the track. I'd rather be over-prepared vs. riding on the edge.

i have called a couple shops around here about the complete b16 swap, and they both said around $3,500-$3,800. thats engine, ecu, axles, install, warranty.....whole nine yards.

Dont even bother trying to Turbo if your not going to do it right. If you want to turbo, get an LS (cheap and plentiful). Save up your cash and get forged rods, low comp pistons and total seal rings. That crank is just fine for about all the hp you can throw at it. Replace ALL your seals, gaskets and pretty much anything not made of metal. The stock cams should be fine for turbo. Dont forget to upgrade your fuel delivery system (pump, rail, injectors, ect.) and maybe throw a set of bearings at it. You wont have daily driven reliablility on a stock internals turbo honda mill.

any d-series engine is not worth turbocharging. they weren't really meant for power. like that guy that said he turbocharged his d16, and at 8 psi or something, he was running 190 whp. that's not that good for a turbocharged engine. :2cents:

Contrary to what 99% of people say on here, a VTEC head is an excellent choice for a turbo car. Yes, the secondary lobes on vtec cams do have a lot more duration and lift than those in an LS head, but they work just fine with turbo. Think about it, if overlap was such a huge issue with the "massive" vtec cams, your naturally aspirated low-ish compression motors like 10:1 GSR's, 10.2:1 B16's, and 10.6:1 ITR's would have problems with a big drop in power when vtec kicks in, because it would be bleeding off all the cylinder pressure. If you can afford a vtec head and take the time to do the conversion properly, the motor will make a lot more power.
