Well, i tried this once with chicken wire (yes, i said chicken wire) that i found around the house. It was very cheap, i admit it, but it looked somewhat ok untill i hit a jimungus dragon fly here in the great bug infested state of Florida, and it ruined a hole peice that it took me almost 20 minutes to make. Your best bet would brobably be to buy or order grill inserts for your ride. They run anywhere from $25 to $300, depending on you car, or how you want it to look. Good luck with it n e way though. If you want to know how to make them though, e-mail me. Just to warn you though, it will defantly be easier to buy inserts.

I use Burn Barrel Mesh , 10 bucks for a 2feet by 3feet. I treated the mesh with acid(this mesh is wide open steel) , nuetralized it and primed it painted with acyrlic laquer. Auto mesh is flimsy burn barrel mesh is solid. You mesh alot for 10 bucks and 10 bucks of paint goes far on mesh.
