96 Taurus GL Noise

Hi guys I have a 96 Taurus GL with the base 3.0L and when I slow down there's a noise like worn wheel bearings or gears in the transmission. I had the idea that if it were wheel bearings the noise would be constant but this only occurs when I let off the gas. What else could it be?
