New to Forum and new to modeling

Hi my name is Andy and I am new here and new to the hobby. Right know I am working on my first model and I have read the FAQ's. It had said something about cutting after painting the body. I wanted to try this on the current model I am doing. I had bought 3M rubbing compound Fine cut. Would this work or did I buy the wrong thing.

Well I know some ppl use the 3M compound with awersome result.. be sure to have more than 1 coat of paint if you rub it..

I'm doing serious modeling for near 2 year now, and last week, it was the first time I get a real result with coumpound.. don't know what I did, but foe the first time I sayd to myselft, damn.. finally a perfect job !

so take your time, chance are you not be getting the perfect result on your first model :bigthumb:

I am working on the Kure Nismo.

I have 3M rubbing compound, but I'm not sure if it is "fine cut" or not. It is an automotive scratch remover, basically. However, I also tracked down some "Novus 2 Plastic Polish" at a plastic supply store (GE Polysomething). They might have one of those in your neighbourhood. Novus I found to be much finer/liquidous then 3M. There are also several other modelling specific polishes available from Japan, from HLJ (www.hlj.com).

Tamiya compound used to be the weapon of choice for a lot of people, but it is now out of production (many people still wondering why). This thread (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/t114195.html) outlines some of the alternatives available. If you can find Tamiya compound at your LHS, scoop it up, but otherwise try to find some of the other compounds listed in the above thread. That's my take on the situation, anyway.

For your reference, Tamiya compound had an MSRP of 150 yen, which is about $1 US for (IIRC) 20g. If your LHS has a tube of it for like $10, I'd probably skip it and go for one of these others.

I paid $13 CDN ($8-9 US) for 8 oz of Novus 2 (will do a lot of cars)
