Drifting???

I am a muscle car guy, I just do not understand this drifting thing. What exactly is the point? From what little I have read and seen about drifting, it looks like just doing donuts in a parking lot. Is that supposed to be impressive? I am not trying to be rude, I just do not get it.

its the feeling you get from it.. the feeling of total control of your car.. yet no controll.. its just a thing you have to try

Only problem is that P10s technically don't "drift". ;)

As for the purpose of drifting... it's really just a fun way to take corners at speed with a RWD vehicle. It's sorta like getting your lean-on in a s-turn on a motorcycle... sure, you could do it upright, but it's faster and more fun to lean it over. Drifting is a rush when your wheels are screaming and it almost feels like you're gonna lose the line and then all of a sudden you grab and your traction rips you through the rest of the turn.

Drifting is WAY more than just doing burnouts in a parking lot. That is generally called "being a fuckwit".

I feel the same way about drag racing. hehe

I just like track racing much better.

Drifting is far more than doing donuts- that is for Hondorks anyway- it is going into the corner sideways- sort of like a controllable oversteer- it is extremely fun & addictive when done right- and is really restricted to RWD and a rightly tuned AWD cars. FWD can drift with a hell of a lot rear brake bias and hard Rear Suspension- but you can't use it for anything else but drifting- in which it is not worth it.

it's the pure exhileration, the adrenaline rush that you get from having your car completely ass-sideways; tires squeeling, engine wailing; around a corner and then grabbing it back into conformity again. it's also the skill. it takes alot of skill to drift properly, and it's one of those things that you're ALWAYS perfecting.

i, personally, don't see the point of drag racing. "whoopee! let's go in a straight line for 12 seconds! what fun!" *yawn*:wink:

Watch rally racing sometime, that's drifting. Gravel roads are even funner to drift on because with todays tires it's harder to drift with some cars, but on gravel RWD is god on that stuff.

hehe. I remember when I first purchased Gran Turismo. I was reading through the booklet, and came across the "How to drift" section. At first I thought it only applied to the game, then I realized they were actually explaining how to do it in YOUR car. I remember thinking, "Oh boy, I wonder how many impressionable kids are gonna start trying to bust out this shit!" It didn't tell you that drifting isn't exactly a very good thing to be doing in your daily driver. Unless, of course, you ENJOY spending time having your suspension/alignment overhauled. :biggrin:

With the exception of rallying, drifting is pretty 'useless'. For all intents and purposes, it's car ballet. It's an exciting way to take a corner at very high speeds under what seems like an uncontrollable chaotic situation. Eye candy for the onlookers, adrenaline rush for the driver.

The Japanese have elevated drifting to an art. It's insane.

In rally, drifting is functional because of the lack of traction in the course. Cars will naturally slide. So those who can control that slide have an advantage.

drifting = teh art of scrubbing speed by going sideways in a controlled slide

I hear you.From what I can see,it's rather like trying to drive dirt-track or gravel-sprints,but with the added bonus of wrecking your tyres.
