Intercool a Turbo I

I've just scored an 88 Turbo motor off a Lebaron, only problem is that it's a Turbo I.
All i have to do to make it a Turbo II is put an intercooler on it right?
If this is true then can someone tell me how?
Thanks

Not really, I hate how people mislead by saying it is as simple as adding an intercooler. It is far from that easy. Which Turbo I motor is it? Is it a 2.2L engine or a 2.5L engine?

It's a 2.2L, and i didnt' say it was easy, i just want to know how to intercool it.

Well, if all you want to do is add an intercooler, that is simple. Just find one from a 1989 and up Turbo II or Turbo IV engine. Get all the intake parts and piping from the intercooler. I'll find a detailed write up.
If you actually want to convert this to a Turbo II it will cost more time and money than it is worth. You would be better off buying the Turbo II block and head.

Adding the intercooler is not even close to making it a T2. The T2 had stronger internals, like rods and pistons. A steel crank, instead of cast iron. Cross drilled head, and different intake manifold(I think the '88-up T1 had similar manifold but not the same, like 1 piece VS a 2 piece manifold). And of course the intercooler and different ECU.
Intercooling a 88 is really simple, since you already have the blow-through design. It will not make it a T2 at all, but you can run more boost on pump gas and gives you more HP on your current boost setting due to the cooler air.
What you should do is go one EBAY and get a intercooler/radiator setup from a T2. They are on ebay quite often. I just bought one myself. Also get the stock T2 airbox and hoses, they are on ebay all the time.
Maybe POLYGON can help me out, because I'm not sure about which way the turbo points. Like for example on my '87 the turbo points straight up, on T2 cars they point straight forward. Your 88 has the mitsubishi turbo if I'm not mistaken, and I don't have much experience with them. You could always find a T2 Garrett turbo off ebay to put on as well. Just make sure you get the manifold also because they might be different, I'm not really sure.

okay since you have a 2.2 witch is 88 you prob have the one pice intake similar to the 2.5L turbo
if not u will jave the log intake witch for me is shit less air less power
not to good on air flow
if you have the one pice intake witch i sugest useing u will need the top hose and intercoller from an 87-91 shelbyz or shelby
the lower hose will not fit on the mitsu turbo use 88 and up on 2.2 and 2.5 non intercooled
thats the easy way you might even feel some more boost 1 to 3 psi depending on application
once this is done i allso sugjest upgradiung ur computer to a 87 shelby z or mpcomputer from mopar and get stock injectors from a 89 or 90 2.5L turbo and get a ajustable fuel presure regulator
the hard way invalves all internals
rods
pistons
ohh and ur 88 has a sliping cam u should up grade it to roller cam from 89 up 2.5L turbo or just rip off the hole head off a 2.5L turbo
now if u change the hole head remmber that 88 and under 2.2 use 10mm bolts
and 89 and up use 11 mm
so dont fuck up on that
umm if u need more info dont be afraid to ask or add me to msn [email protected]
heres my fave site you will all find it usefull and gus man if u ever see this thanx man your tips have made my car a fucken 300hp fucken ripper bloweer mother fucken bitch mustang camero vet eater;)

Actually the 86-up had 11mm head bolts. Only 85-older got the 10's. It's funny, because they fixed one problem and created another. In 86 when they changed to 11mm head bolts, they also went to the lightweight rods which most people know they can only handle about 200-225 HP before they snap like a twig. Unfortunately, my 87 Daytona T1 has the lightweight rods but it does have 11mm head bolts which really helps keep the old head gasket count down.

Yeah I've thought about it plenty, but it can only be dreams for now because the all my money is going towards the restoration of my truck right now. It's a 77 Dodge Power Wagon. Within the past 2 years I've put about 10K into between bodywork/paint and the engine. Next in line is a gear change in the differentials, a LSD for the rear diff, and then after that I'm going to do a 4'' lift and I have a set of aluminum American Racing wheels and 33's to go on it.

it can be a few things, my car did that and it was the combo of the fuel pump and the powermodule, (little black computer on driver side under hood)
