Heel and toe explanation

I'm just wondering if anyone could explain what exactly is 'heel and toe' shifting? I see that term all over the place, but i can't find anything that explains what it is.
Also, in the near future, i'd like to learn how to drive stick because i want to get a manual trans vehicle, as the 3 cars i've owned up to this point have all been slushboxes. Does anyone have any good ideas how to get a car to learn in? The only person i know who drives stick is my cousin-in-law, but it's his modded Tercel and i don't want to risk damaging anything in the transmission, or the clutch, etc. Would renting a manual car for a couple of days be a good idea? Obviously i'm a newb, but i'm trying to learn as much as i can. Thanks a bunch.

i'd say just go buy a manual car and you'll learn that way pretty fast. thats what i did...and if you dont learn fast then you can always take the city bus to work. :iceslolan

Well, i'm not buying another car anytime soon. I'm still making payments on my current car. I was leaning toward renting a manual car so that i could abuse the hell out of it while i learn to drive stick, and i don't have to worry about any mechanical damage that may occur in the process.
Can anyone explain heel and toe shifting? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?

Don't feel bad, I drive a stick and I don't know what heel and toe shifting is.
it's probably something that I do all the time, I just don't know the name of it.

Heel-toe shifting is controlling the gas & brake with right foot(at the same time) while the left foot works the clutch.
Apply brakes with right toe, bump throttle (rev match) with right heel & engage clutch with left foot while DOWNSHIFTING. Its pretty hard to do the "heel toe" method with stock pedals in a honda. When I heel/toe I actually use the side of my foot on the gas & other side on brakes.
Generally speaking, not time to go in depth. if i was home i could set you with a good link.

i say don't bother wasting your money on a rental, if you're at least an average driver you should be able to learn how to drive stick in a day. you shouldn't worry about heel and toe for now, kinda advanced for someone learning the ropes.
