help me get this straight

I know there has been a flood of this but I want to figure something out...

I have looked at the www.4thgenerationcivic.com site under engines (very sweet site by the way)

And it says you can swap the D16Z6 from the 92-95 civics in and the D16Y8 from the newer civics.

My question is... Besides wiring the vtec, does it require alot of mods like the b16 to make it fit ? Will it bolt right in and up to a 91 lx 5 speed tranny?

Trying to weigh my options here....is a vtec controller expensive?

It looks to me like a Z6 or Y8 could be my best bet...newer, parts are easier to find and 125hp aint bad....

Just as long as I can use my tranny and dont need to buy a ton of parts to get it to work right.

it wil bolt up to the tranny and bolts right in

the wiring is the pain. z6 is obd1, y8 is obdII so you gotta either wire it as obd0 and keep your ECu which is the easiest, or convert which is harder.

If you keep it obd0, you need a VTEC controller or RPM activated switch, and no they're not hard to install. usually they come wiht directions, if not you can find them on the internet.

If you do it do it right and go OBD-I. I heard doing the RPM switch way sucks ass.

That is good news. I am sure I can find either of them around here somewhere hopefully cheap.

Any recomendations on which one would be better? I assume the y8 because it is newer but I'd love to hear an opinion or 2.

I though I have heard of people using si ecu's, would this make a difference?

And is it really hard to convert to obd 1 or II ?

I Am dealing with a bone stock STD 4 speed model so I am starting from scratch here. But I want to do this right. I commute all over with my hatch and need it to last a long time...which makes me lean towards a y8 because I can probably get one with low low miles.

I know you can buy OBD-O > OBD-I wiring harnesses. I assume it is easy as plug and play. However I think that if you went with a Y8 you would have to use a lot of Z6 parts because that is OBD-I and Y8 is OBD-II. And converting an OBD-0 car to OBD-II is a major bitch, especially for the unexperienced.

the obd1 conversoin harness is for the ECU plugs only. you would still have to change over the injectors, injector plugs, distributor, distributor plugs, and 4 wire o2 sensor.

Even so that stuff is no big deal to install.

I agree with fourthgen...

As the motors get newer, the programs (obd), get more of a pain in the ass to work with. The easiest would be a Zc, but if you want sohc vtec, i would go for the z6, on account of 0bd-1 is probably the best program to work with. Not to mention the easiest to get into an obd-0 vehicle.

You can get on of the Sohc vtec valve covers that dont say "vtec" and a spoon vtec controller....Sleeper style.:bigthumb:

Yeah I was dead set on a ZC but after polling people and reading up, I ave heard all kinds of things. And many (not all) of the ZC owners have stated some problems with the motor eating distributors and breaking down more often than b16's.

And since this is just my commuter not a racer, it sounds like the z6 might be a better choice for the longrun since parts are easier to find and bolt on mods are readily available. Plus there is not a huge hp difference.

And it sounds like obd1 would be the better way to go to get it done right the 1st time.

Is it easy to find the z6 motor out there?
