Wheel and Tire sizes

Looking to upgrade my tires on my GS. The stock rims are 14x6 (why did muscle cars have such tiny wheels?). I currently have on 215/75/14 tires - want to go wider to help my launch at the track. I had another GS with 225/65/14 on the same style 14x6 wheels - it seemed OK although handling was sloppy. To move up to 15" wheels cost some serious $$. Anyone here put anything wider than 215 tires on their 14x6 wheels? Should I just bite the bullet and shell out $1,000 for 15x7 wheels? Would 15x8's fit on my GM A-body? What wheel and tire sizes are you guys running?

If you're looking for better handling, 15" rims are definitely the minimum. A-bodies have cavernous rear wheel wells and room in front as well- you should be able to get 265/50R-15 on 15x8's all around. I've even seen guys stuffing 295/50R-15's in the back of their Chevelles. Of course, the right wheel offset is critical there. Have your local wheel shop get your ride up on the lift and fit the rim you're going to go with- most GM intermediates like at least a 4" backspace.

I know on my Nova, you can stuff a 275 tire on a 15x8 on the rear. Front I don't think you can go much over 235 with out rubbing problems.

I'm going to need as much rubber out back as possible... with 377ft-lbs @ 2000rpm leaving on a 2000stall converter will result in nothing but smoke. :smile:
