It is going to be hard to find a compact car in decent condition for that amount of money. Anything for that cheap is going to be real high mileage and have a lot of problems. Your best bet is probably an early 80's to late seventies GM car. They are gas hogs and not real pretty but the parts are cheap and they are easy to repair. You can get a grandma car like a malibu, caprice, cutlass, etc that is in ok condition for that price range. You might be able to find like an early 90's escort or cavalier in that range as well, but they probably will not be in great condition. Really the best advice would be save up some more cash and get something more like what he wants.

2k doesn't leave a lot of wiggle room, but I've been a fan of used Civics for a long time. Quite a reliable little car.

The Sentra Se-R goes for about that. Like 1990 or thereabouts. Check out edmunds.com. My friend just got one and its a lot of fast car for the money.

Look for a mid to late 1980's Merkur XR4ti. They are sold for very little, maybe around $1600 to $2000. RWD, 2.3L turbo, 5speed, some come with moon-roof and leather, and plenty of options. It is known as the Ford Sierra in Europe, one of those European performance sports compacts.

It doesn't look like much of a sports car, but it has (or had) a huge performance and racing history behind it. There were even Cosworth Sierras in Europe.
