how long can a cherokee last?

I've been recently looking into buying a used SUV for under 9k. Ford Explorer Sports and Jeep Cherokees are my main targets.

I found an explorer with 75k on it fully loaded for 7500. From what I've read, I can take that to 130k and shouldn't really have to worry too much.

I know the Cherokee is dependable and I see a ton of jeeps with a lot of mileage on them. I i recently found a 2000 with 85k on it. I know it has a lot to do with how it was treated, but what mileage can i take a cherokee to?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Treat a Cherokee good and it will last forever(not kidding)
My Cherokee is the MOST Reliable Vehicle Ive ever driven, owned, or seen. Mine has 160,xxx miles on it and it only needs a new PCV Valve and some rocker adjustment.

I have only had ONE problem since Ive owned my Jeep, the Rubber O-Ring for the Filter mount started to leak. $10 and 30minutes was all it took to fix it myself. You don't even need to really baby a Jeep and it will last forever. I offroad A LOT and my Jeep loves it. All my Jeep asks for in return is a little gas, maintenece, and some TLC.

Go for the the Cherokee, they look better, are more reliable, are way better for Off-Road adventures, have much better power, and a superior drivetrain.

Good Luck :bigthumb:

My '89 currently has 224,000+ on it, and it's still running strong. The guy I bought it from said he overhauled the 4.0 @170,000, but I don't know to what extent. Interior is still in good shape, suspension and chassis are still good, all glass is good, 4WD still works great; I'm hoping to get another 75,000+ out of it. Best running automobile I've ever driven. In my book, Jeep certainly lives up to their reputation.

As for repairs, all I can claim is having to replace the radiator resivior and it needs a new muffler. BTW, I've put 25,000+ on it over the past 2 years.

I own a 1988 Cherokee that currently has 410,000 miles on it! The original AMC 6-cyl engine went about 350,000 miles before quiting. With good care and maintenance, these Cherokees will last

I have to agree with the above although I have had to do regular maintance to my jeep. The clutch and the starter went at different times. I have added tires, belt, battery, etc the usual stuff. Anyway I bought my 91 Cherokee 4dr/2wd 5 sp for $1700 at 153000 miles. I now have 208000 miles. I figure I am into my jeep for about $3000 total with stero and the already mentioned and I don't think there is any letting up. It runs better than my wifes 96 Chev Cav and my friends Toyota 4 runner (piece of junk). Come to think of it. My jeep runs better than most peoples cars that I know. Jeeps just run good. The main reason for that is the inline 6 4.0. I believe that this motor has seven bearings on the cranck. That is great, makes it really tough. then think about the clearance, stance (wider than explorer/blazer/4runner/pathfinder) which is great for off roading. Then there is the space. A 4dr has more cargo room than most, if not all of the above mentioned. Mileage is the next best thing. My jeep has better mileage that the explorer/blazer/4 runner for sure. I have friends that have almost new explorer/blazer/4 runner and they hate my jeep's great mileage. Speed. Jeep cherokee is one of the faster off the line suv around. Now my advantages may be becasue I have a 2wd but that is good enough for me. Go for the jeep. easy to work on, reliable (4.0 inline 6 better than the four) and most affordable.

I would have to disagree with all of the above statements! I bought my 90 Jeep Cherokee Laredo in March after the owner before me had dropped $1700 into for it to pass safety. I figured after that much money was put into it that I was getting a great deal.
I was dead wrong! A week after purchasing the Jeep, I had to put another $1400 into because all of the fuel injectors were leaking and had to be replaced along with a new fuel pump hose and clamp and some repairs to the cruise control wiring. (Which by the way still doesn't work along with the AC)
Then 2 months later I start to get this crazy shake at 90km and over which progressively got worse and to the point where I can no longer drive on the highway. I've spent another $300 dollars to try and fix the problem and have brought it to 3 garages and still no one can tell me exactly what's wrong with it or how to fix it.

While the mechanics were looking over my Jeep they also discovered that my engine is leaking oil and transmition fluid and along with the leaks it has a rough sounding noise coming from the rear axle differential.

If I had of known I was going to have this much trouble with Jeep I would have stayed clear!

As soon as I can afford to, I'm switching back to CHEVY (built like a rock!) and never looking back!!! I may have just simply got a lemon but it has turned me off Jeep/Chrysler/Dodge and everything associated with Jeep for life!!!

A pissed off Jeep owner!

P.S. Thanks for all your help with my crapy Jeep on this forum though, I do appreciate all your input. :screwy: :screwy:

You are my mortal enemy now.

Your Jeep was probably owned by a dumbass that couldnt tell the difference between a piston or his dog. He probably treated the Jeep like shit. You treat any car like shit and it WILL fall apart.

As for your Chevy, have you ever been to a Junkyard? Last time I was at one. I saw 1 Dodge, No Jeeps, and 80+ Chevys. But go ahead and run back to your POS Chevy. Thats one less bastard to have the pleasure of owning a MOPAR. Just because you had a mistreated Jeep doesnt mean they ALL suck.

But before you get rid of your Jeep, offroad it to the tallest peak in your area(it WILL make) and throw yourself off.
Thank You:flipa:

Sounds like someone needs to get laid! Get off the roids man and chill out! Walk over and give your precious Jeep a kiss, it looks like the thing has never even seen a dirt road before, so I'm sure it's nice and clean for you to embrace it in a nice long lip-lock.
I'll make sure to wave to you on the side of the road when I drive by in longest lasting truck out there.

CHEVY POWER ALL THE WAY BUDDY!

P.S. The previous owner was lady in her 40's I highly doubt she abused my Jeep, but nice try...I'll be surprised if I can go a month without having to put more money into that Chrysler Crap! :loser:

That is why I learned to repair my Jeep myself. Most shops that "fixed" my Jeep in the past just screwed it up or made the problem worse. Yes

.....and do they get good gas mileage

It depends on how you drive it, its hard to not haul ass everyewhere when you have the 4.0L. If you drive like a "normal" person you can get anywheres from 18-25mpg, but if you drive like me you get around 13-20mpg. Thats not bad for a powerful I-6 SUV Engine, not bad at all.

Let us know WHEN you get a Jeep

BTW- When you check out a Jeep there are a few things that are a must to check for. Make sure the water pump is not leaking, the mech fan clutch is in good shape, no major oil leaks especially around the front and rear main seals. Also, check the oil filter mount for leaks because that is a trouble spot for leaks but an easy one to fix. Let the AC run for a few minutes to make sure there are no water leaks at tubing couplings. Lastly check the roof for paint chipping and bubbling.

Those are the most frequent problems with used Jeeps(135k+ miles) Just make sure you get a Jeep that hasnt been f*cked all to hell and back. A good Jeep will go a LONG ways!

Good Luck

Looks very nice and clean. How many miles?
It looks like there are a few oil drops at the rear in the pic so there might be a few leaks in the front. Check to see where they are coming from. The stains on the concrete are pretty small so it just might be an oil plug leak. If you do not have a nylon washer on the plug it WILL leak.

Hi, I am new to this forum. Thanks to the administrators for their work in upkeeping this great site!

I own a 1988 Jeep Cherokee Limited with 300,000 kilometers on it (Canada). We have HARSH winters here and terribly dry summers too. I have only one thing to say. Jeeps are built TOUGH! I would never buy another SUV. Go for Jeep, the US Army uses them I believe?

Anyways, my 2 cents.

Can't wait for the snow to fall! Woohoo!!

My last cherokee 4cyl, 5 speed, went almost 280,000 and would have gone more if it hadnt have been accidentally gotten hot.I have had
4 Jeeps and all have been fairly plain and have run well into the 200,000
plus with few problems and no majors , clutches about every 120,000.
I have also bought used 2 explorers and had many major problems, transmissions etc and parts problems too with them. I always do all
maintenance plus some and that helps, but the same was done to the Explorers. A relative who is in police work says his dept and others are still trying to hang on as long as they can with the old Cherokees, the Explorers they had and Blazers are long gone.I vote for Jeeps , they have not let me down in any condition--4 or 6 cylinder, try a 4.0 V-6
Cherokee against a Explorer in snow and the Explorer cant pull much of anything, either. Needless to say I'm sold on Jeep Cherokees. You can get parts for them anywhere in the world, too. Not for an Explorer!
Jeeps do leak oil, and have some (early ones mostly) strange minor wiring things happen, but just find an old Jeep mechanic and you will be ok.

I am to see a '89 Jeep Cherokee 4d, 4wd, 5-speed 4.0L - I suppose its the 6cyl one - but when I called to ask for more information the person said, among other things, said it had 93k miles. Now, the person also said that he had a new things placed on, like the transmition and tires almost new. Is there a reason to be suspicious? I asked if he did a lot of off-road driving, he said he usually rode high ways.
Any help is welcome.

I just bought a 1999 jeep cherokee because I already have a 1988 and love them so much. I will never own a chevy again. Every chevy I had fell apart after it turned 7 or 8 years old. My 88 jeep is still going strong with 180,000+ miles on it. I had to get a second one only because I moved and have to drive further to work. It isn't that fun to drive down the expressway in a 88 woody cherokee that has a 4" suspension lift, 33" tires and gearing for off roading. Besides- the guys at work were getting jealous that they couldn't have the little bookkeepers truck so I had to rub it in with not 1 jeep but 2! :grinno:

I own a 1992 Jeep with 340 000 and until the 10 year mark it ran great but after that it started to fall apart. One lack of matenaince and two lack of money. I had to replace the normal things such as tires, air filter, spark plugs, fan belt, and muffler. The major things I had to replace was, oil pan seals and plug, a/c fan, driveshaft, control arm, mirrior that won't stay glued to the glass. With the maintenance the Jeep still runs great. I would have to say this would be the best winter vehicle I ever owned, becuase when you stick it into 4wd, your out of there no problem.

I am a 20 "vet" of a Jeep dealership parts department and I will sum up the Cherokee question : My father has a heart condition and we bought him a 97 with 99515 miles on it...! Does anyone think I would let him buy
it if it was unreliable ? I have customers that have 220-300 thousand miles on them ! As someone else said, check a few things first IE :maint,condition,etc...
As far as the dork who spent 1400 some odd dollars...He (she) should have replaced all orings, not injectors (the seal kit is $11.70 ! ).I have never stocked a injector, just orings. Is it just me or do the rest of you think he should find a new mechanic ! As far as front end work, a simple steering shock and or track bar will cure it.
All my family and friends drive Cherokees ! I never have to worry about late night phone calls telling me they are stranded ...

BTW : The Liberty looks to be as good so far ( still to soon ),we just get them in for maint' no major repairs or ticks ! ( We do have Grands in daily )

When i bought in dec I took it to some mmr's to try out what it could handle i was only stopped when the drifts were about hood level I love the all time four wheel drive it makes the ride that much better!! I also got the fully loaded model and even compared to new cars is unbelievibly comfortable so if any one wants to get the grand cherokee it will be the best investment you can make!!!

I just turned over the big 200,000 with my 4.0L Litre Cherokee Pioneer and my god its still running strong as ever. The only problems are the exhaust manifold(which I will be replacing with headers) and the paint fading(which i had repainted). I plan to keep the beauty for atleast another 150,000 miles from what I've heard from people. The engine has no signs of weakening. I agree with you guys though I dont see what complaint any Jeep owner would have with Cherokees except for the all the damn oil leaks, but a Jeep is a Jeep for god's sake, its not meant to stay clean and pretty all the time, just keep the fluids filled and youre golden.

A long time if taken care of.

My 88 has 239,000 miles on it with no major work on any component. Engine/ Transmission/wheel bearings, etc. all original with no internal repairs.

I have replaced brake pads three times I rebuilt the rear springs. (I have some property up in the mountains so I do a lot of hauling in 4wd and low range.). I Forgot -- I also had the radiator rodded out, replaced the alternator and the serpentine belt once.

Had an intermittent problem caused by bad connection.

I wish I could say the jeep I own is the best vechichle I've ever owned but I can't. I bought my 90 cherokee used 7yr ago and am constantly repairing something on it. But it is the best 4X4 I have ever owned!!! I have only got stuck in it once [on a job site, it took a backhoe and a bobcat to get me out - I'm sure I could have driven out if not for the trees] When I can afford to replace it I will - with another jeep. I live on a mountain with a long driveway on the north side so good traction is a must for me.

Hello jds3379,

If you have been around the block with the 1988 in repairs.... might you please answer a question for me?

I was given a 1988 with the 4.0L straight 6 motor and it is leaking oil
from or near the distrubutor cap. It is not from the valve cover gasket.
I was wondering it there is a o-ring on the distrubutor shaft that may be bad and forcing oil out. I check the compress on the cylinders and my results are
Here (http://www.pennswoods.net/~luke1027/compresschecks.jpg)

Besides, I don't think a bad head gasket would blow out oil that fast and hard ... would it?

In any case, I have oil all over the right side of the motor and I don't know where it is coming from.

Any advice would be great.

THanks,

Luke

A couple of things to check.
I know this seems obvious but the oil filter is right next to the distributor.
Check and make sure it's tight. There is also an oil filter bypass plug which shouldn't have been touched since it left the factory.

My next thought is to clean it up good so you can see where it's coming from. The Distributor has a gasket..Only thoughts at present.
good luck.

Front track bar needs replacing. My jeep would hop all over the road if I hit some bumps and new shocks made no difference. The track bar bushing or ball joint was loose (the dealer did not specify) and now it drives great.

Mechanics are people too and sometimes not all that well trained.

Now I won't say that mine is without its problems but I still love that XJ, nothing is more fun in the snow. I live in NJ and there are not that many off road places here so I LOVE the winter.

The fastest oil leak I have had from a worn part was the oil presure sensor. The valve blew out so instead of sensing the presure it was just letting it out. 25$ and it was as good as new, The shop it is under warenty with said it was the rear main leaking and wanted to fix it. I said no thanks, I will do it myself. 15 minutes in a advance auto parking lot with an 6 inch cresent. Just makes me want to smack the 3 dealer mechanics. just use your uncommon sence.

My little 88 Wagoneer has 269K and is still going strong (even though I drive like an Earnhardt). Except for my fuel injectors wearing out, I've had no major problems. When I put the tranny in "power" mode, I can still take most F-150s off the line. With regular maintanence, I expect to get at least another 100K out of it. :evillol:

[QUOTE=jharber15] It all comes down to maintenance, Do you know why old airplanes are still flying? Because they are repaired often and well maintained. Jeep Cherokees have an advantage in the long-lasting category simply because of the pairing up of the cast iron head and block 4.0L engine and the Aisen AW4 four-speed automatic transmission.
The engine design is tried and true and originally dates back to the mid-sixties AMC 258cid. The 258 evolved into the 242 and in 1987 when Chrysler took over, the 4.0L. The AW4 is made in Japan and is literally bullet proof. Stock Cherokees do have a cheapy rear axel in the Dana model 35 and that's the weak sister of the power train. Expect to put 200,000-250,000 on the first engine before a top end overhaul if you follow maintainance routines and the AW4 tranny will probably outlast the second engine. I've seen plenty of XJs ( Cherokees, not Grand Cherokees) that have topped the 350,000 mile mark and are still running strong. So it's all about starting with a good design with a reliable running gear and making friends with a good Jeep mechanic, or do the maintenance yourself. I change the oil in my 2000 Cherokee Sport every 2000 miles. I would suggest not going over the 3,000 mile mark between oil changes and service the transmission every 15 or 20 thousand.

OKAY! So far I've sat this one out, but here I go...

My 96 just turned over 122K, and I know it's just broke in by the 250K standard, but I've got to say I love it. The thing I guess that impresses me is how easy the XJ is to work on.

When I bought mine, I went all through it with the usual maintenance items (fluids, tune-up, etc). I have since lifted it, built a roof rack for it, installed a throttle body spacer, bored out the throttle body, installed lights and a brush guard. My front brakes needed some work recently, the guides for the pads had worn badly, I was able to weld the guides and grind them back true, the brakes themselves are a snap to change. DEFINITELY save the $300 and do your front brakes yourself!

Like others, my stock manifold has a crack where the two pipes come together, will be replacing with a header soon.

Before my throttle body and intake mods, I got 15mpg dirt to 20mpg hwy, with the change i'm now getting 17-18 dirt and up to 23 hwy if I lay off the pedal. (A couple of days ago, I was showing my kids how snappy the accel is with the new intake. My son says "are you getting better mileage?" Not when I drive it like this! -as I hammered down the pedal)

If I had it to do over, the only thing I'd consider to do differently would be to go with a 5 speed, but my auto is growing on me...

Hi: I am a medical courier in Traverse City Mi. I have just bought the 2000 Cherokee I have been driving for the last three years. It has 300,000 miles on it. Boss sold it to me for $500.00. I have put $2500.00 into it. Just normal stuff on engine, tune ups and such. Rest on dents, muffler etc. Runs like a top. I love it. Duane

Overall quite happy with owning a jeep, might never buy another make ever again.

Just recently got a cherokee with 199k on it. Other than having to replace the CPS right off the bat it runs like a charm. Now all I need to do is get the damn thing aligned. Wobble wobble...

I have had my Cherokee 6 mos but so far I am pleased. I don't need all the creature comforts you find in SUVs today, but I really appreciate a great design. It's simple but well engineered. When I went to look at this 88 that my neighbor was selling, I popped the hood and it brought a smile to my face. I saw the old straight six that I had twice before in a couple old AMC cars. Although the cars has some shortcomings, you could not kill these engines.
Kudos to the team that came up with th XJ design back in the 80's. Like most classics, it stands up to the test of time.

I have a 89 red jee cheerokee limited and every week something new pops up.. it runs but it jitters just like the other guy's I love my jeep and have always wanted one it juts loves to be dificult. My gas isnt great but it isn't bad either but hey, it a v 6 lol thats what happens. I have 172,xxx miles on it so i cannot be made it has served its ime. However i would make sure that the owner treated the jeep right. Mine was treated like shit before me, being the reason it acts like shit. It could definitely fit the children and the booster seat the back seat is equivalant to any other car's rear seats. I beleive that you might want to get a little newer car being that you have children and if your lil red jeep is like mine you might have some problems. Happy Jeepin

Wow, all these responses to how long a Jeep Cherokee can last! This seems most popular topic ever. How long can a Jeep last? I posted earlier, but this just goes on and on. So I revisit: "How long can a Jeep Cherokee Last". Well, sad to say, it outlasts some of our marriages, our shoes, our watches and pets! But so what? I have a beautiful 2000 XJ with 68,900 miles on it. Because of my meticulous upkeep even the Jeep dealer I bought it from universally agrees it looks and runs better than the day I bought it new in '99.
But since it has nearly 70,000 miles the same dealer tells me it is worth a hamburger and a milkshake at Mel's Hollywood diner. Hey, they filmed "American Graffiti" there!
Isn't it sad that we take care of a vehicle better than we take care of ourselves only to have our friendly Jeep dealer and our handy "Kelly Blue Book" five years later tell us all our TLC is worthless?
Let's go on taking care of and worshipping our Jeep Cherokees. Yes they will last generations, but in the end, when we are long gone there will be a "pot-bellied" auctioneer selling it off to the highest bid over $200. I'm leaving mine to my daughter and screw the Dealer with thier pressured offerings of a successor! The Grand Cherokees, the Libertys....GIVE ME A BREAK!!! Those vehicles are for hopeless "Yuppies" who will never take them anywhere further than the nearest "Piggly Wiggly" or "Walmart". I refuse to trade my beloved Cherokee in for one of those imposters! And I refuse to allow "Armour All" on the tires!!!! Okay, now I feel better.

It did it twice. First time it happened, I visited my local mechanic, he seen my old jeep, and he told me to get lost(Whats new?). I decided tofix it myself I visited local Jeep Dealer..and a wonderful mechanic suggested I firstget under the Car.on the the left side..and looked for the position switch...on the transmition bell...well! So i got ingenious!, and asked my son to get under...he didnt know what the switch looked liked ! ($ years of College at a private intistitution, and thats what I got for my money!...:). So..down I went, thats when I found out the switch looked like a dang old Starter selenoid...and even had a plastic cap on it.!..so much for looking for lose wires! Then My trainning as aircraft mechanic kicked in..ie If it does not work, smack it with a rubber hammer..if it breaks..it needed changuing any ways. Guess what?..I works! Come to find out, due to vibration from the road, the cap some times pulls out..and all contact is lost. All you have to do is push it back in place. So..if you ever in the bunnies..and the old jeep dont want to start...give it a try. this jeep got 238,621 miles..and still doing a full days worth of work.

My 97 Cherokee sport has just witnessed its 120,000 mile. Since buying it in 01' from a guy who only knew his way around a bottle of armor-all, I have only had to replace the fuel pump, tires and brake pads. It still runs/looks like new! My last vehicle was a 92 Ford Bronco with the 351w. I spent more time working on that d@mn thing than driving it, the tailgate started to rust from the inside out, and I never got it to 80,000 miles!

My Cherokee Sport is a 93. Been in the Family since then as well. Keep up the routine maint etc, and it will last forever. In 2003, she had 215,000 miles on it, and was getting tired.

I bought a 95 engine w/ 5,000 miles on it from the local junkyard for 2 bills, rebuilt it myself and installed it myself, and she still runs great! She now has 246,000 miles on it.

All I I ever had to do was replace the U-joints on the front axels, replace brakes, exhaust, and routine crap like oil changes etc. Never had a problem. I even had the original clutch for the full 215,000 original miles, which is unheard of. I did replace it when I put the 95 engine in it.
