why does my tranny grind 3rd when speed shifting and how do i fix it

Its grinding from the speed shifting . . . . Replace 3rd gear & synchros. You will probably need 2nd while your in there.

If you know how to do exactly what jackasssi said, do it, otherwise take it to a shop, and afterwards, don't do things to your car that you know to make grinding noises (unless you're going for weight reduction).
