Drifting in city = BAD

I just totally screwed up my car trying drift turning left on a main road in the city. Yes I know it was stupid especially considering it was raining. It actually wasn't really a drift. I was stopped at a red light, when it turned green I turned left. But about half way through the turn I had the miraculous idea of gunning the accelerator. The rear wheels spun out , I over-corrected and the next thing I know, I did a 360 and slammed into the curb and a road sign right after taking out a bus bench. Luckily nobody was hurt...EXCEPT THE CAR! I'm looking at a totally F***ed up rear axle (from the curb), and my front fender is smashed in, also my rim got bent. Worse part is I got the car a week ago (95 240sx). Just wanted to let all the inexperienced rear wheel drivers out there know not to try any racing moves in the city...I learned the hard way.

well as long as it was at night..or in a place where no one was at it wouldn't consider it "stupid" you were just trying to learn how to drift everyone wrecks atleast once its just a matter of time...hardest part when learning how to drift is learning how control the car sideways...get the car fixed and do it again thats how you learn....i just wouldn't try and do it where theres curbs...lol

yeah thanks driftosx, the bystanders were pretty much laughing once they realized nobody was hurt. I wish i could have videotaped it from the outside. Ill try drifting again on a wide road with no curbs, I know what I did wrong (in keeping my foot on the gas and overcorrecting).

I did it in a place where there were no cars on the street at the time and there were no obstacles to hit. I practice drifting on the street i'm not going to even lie to you but i wait till say 2am and go out with a friend to do it in a deserted part of town where the streets are atleast 3 lanes wide..does this make me a moron?..if so..then fuck it i'll be one

They know how to control the car. And some of the drifting you see is at a place in iwakuni called the docks, where its a HUGE open space near some docks, where pedestrians arent allowed, but cars are, therefore it makes a good drifting spot.

Street drifting in Japan is different...the roads there dont always have sidewalks...I donno if youve seen the Movie Ronin, but in the 2nd car chase, where there in France, and before the get on the freeway, they go through some big 4 lane roads with no sidewalks,

I did a very similar thing the day after i got my Caprice (ex-police car, strong small-block 350 interceptor package with posi-trac) when i was 16. I pulled out of one road making a left turn onto another road in the rain... the road was off camber and i gave the car too much throttle putting the back end of the car into the ditch.. i almost hit a telephone pole.. I corrected, tapped the brakes to slow the tire spin and then punched throttle again to push me out of the ditch... essentially text book response. I was so scared i don't know how i did it... But i did, I got out of the ditch with my car unscathed... I killed a couple cat-tails.

i agree about drifting on the street is bad...but when the closest track to you is a nascar track 4hrs away then you have to make do and i don't just go out bullshiting i make sure no one is around its it that i try to make it as safe as possible.

Try renting a parking lot or industrial lot or something. There must be an auto-x or something.

i didn't know you could rent parking lots or industrial lots...anyways most of (parking lots)them around here have WAY to many light post with like a 5' concret barrier around them..and i'm to scared to go drifting around them...

As far as going to road atlanta most of my friends don't understand "why i waste my tires" as they call it..*sigh* they have never been sideways through a turn maybe after a few hundred more "learning" turns i will be able to take them out for a go around..but for right now i wont take the chance.

well, first of all, everyone is right. drifting on the street is dangerous and stupid when it's a busy time of day and/or in a busy section of town, no matter what time. if you're in a super-deserted part of town at 2AM and you drift once or twice, that's not so bad. throwing your rear end out IN THE RAIN in a busy part of town is just plain stupid. you may as well walk up to a sleeping bear, put your dick in his mouth and kick him and see what happens. the same amount of brain-power would be involved.

Hey DoriftoSX, if you're near RDU (I'm assuming granv = granville county), you're not that far from Virginia International Raceway (http://www.virclub.com/). I've personally never been there, and I don't know if they have public days or what...but hey, at least it's not a nascar track :). If I ever manage to sell my land rover and find a sports car, I might just have to check it out this fall (I go to school in Durham).

As long as I know 1 person won't do what I did, then my crash wasn't entirely in vain. Well, just trying to look at the bright side of it. Yeah from now on im driving like a 50 year old man with grandchildren, ESPECIALLY in the rain. (That rain doesn't mess around). I may try drifting again, but it will be in a few months at least, and only in a very empty wide open place with no curbs and more importantly no rain.

Even thought I have a Jeep it is still good "drifting"(yeah yeah I know its not exactly drifting) practice. I can go offroad on some out of the way dirt road to do whatever I want without putting others lives in danger. Also doing it on dirt is easy and there is less wear on my tires, engine, and tranny.

Im sure everybody can find some open back ass road(dirt or paved) to practice drifting on if their is no closed track to do it on.

Corupt- Even tough what you did was not too smart, at least nobody was hurt. You learned your lesson, it was reckless and it could have been worse. Just make sure you remember what happened every time you feel like drifting when other people and vehicles are around.

Its still better that you had a low speed drift crash than a stupid high speed street race crash though.

Logikal - Innocent people die everyday, be it their own fault or people like Corupt. He didn't kill anyone this time and that's what matters.
