Hey i just got this off of ebay. It's a decent r-33 with 60k miles. GTS, but i found a place that will do a rb26 swap for only 2000-including parts-
if they keep my engine. It's already been legalized for us driving.

So did i get a deal?

No you got ripped off! The sellers CAN NOT legalize it for driving it on US streets. You guys really need to read the stickies before jumping off the bridges aye.

your car will have to go to MotoRex. From there you are looking at an additional $12,000 USD+ to comply it. Not to mention the lading and taxes imposed upon it, plus shipping, etc. At the end of the day don't be suprised if you are hit with an additional $18k + bill. You're cheap R33 GTS25t just cost you more than an already complied and ready to go R32 GTR!

Any place that says they can do an RB26DETT swap for 2k is full of shit. It is more than dropping the engine in mate. Your entire fuel delivery system HAS to be upgraded, not to mention the front mount that will be required, ECU, and tuning.

This is perfect example of why I don't trust EBAY sales of anything. Everyone thinks they are getting a deal but in this case you just got raped LEGALLY raped.

I spent 6 hours yesterday calling up the DOT, my insurance agency, and all other automotive venues in the state. Several sources told be that all i need to have is proof of purchase, a true us vin number, and to pass emissions. I would have not bought the car if i didn't klnow what i was doing. For $1000, my seller is providing the 3 aforementioned things. I really don't care how he gets this done, but I will be able to drive it whereever and whenever I want. It may be a different process in different places, but I live in GA and everyone has told me the same thing. And I wasn't talking to just desk workers, but the superintendants who run the places, and are obliged to know the rules. No motorex, no offroad or show licensing, no lhd conversions.

as for the swap, it costs 5500. They are keeping the engine and tranny which is valued at about 3500 to them and only chargin me the rest of the 2000. So I just need 2 bring in the rb26 and 2k

Just make sure you don't pay him a single penny until he can provide you the necessary documents. Check the VIN from DOT.

I believe you missed this part:

"U.S. Department of Transportation clearance letter if your vehicle was last registered in a foreign county; "

Yes i saw that, it has a fee of less than 30 dollars, and when i called them, they told me it wouldn't be a big deal as long as i had a us vin#. So as long as my seller comes through, it should work out. If not, I'll just go through motorex. I'll keep ppl posted.

All I'm saying make sure it actually has a real US VIN before you pay anything. A number that also belongs to that car and to something else.

Good Luck, man.

I hope it runs smooth for you, I know how the gov't can say one thing on the phone. You get there, and bam.

Oh,

She looks to have a bit of body damage, you did notice that?

Both front corners of the bumper are scraped, and the rear driver side in the back, looks fairly hit.

Yes, I noticed that. The car itself runs fine, but when i get my bodykit, I'll have to take the back dent out. On the whole, since the legalization and registration is going to cost me under 1500 total, I say its not bad for an r-33 which can be easily upgraded.

I got my fingers crossed for you. I just hope you do not get screwed.

Even the seller is saying it will be $5000 for legalization. Without that he won't have a US VIN for it, unless it is coming off from another car. That is why I said don't pay him anything until you have the paperwork because most likely you will never get that car legally registered.

If the car is coming from overseas to the states, no matter how you think youre interpating the laws, you will not be legal unless it goes to motorex full stop. As of today they are the ONLY company that is complying them. If you don't believe me fine, go to Omega's website, one of thier competitors and flick them an email. Go to RBmotoring who brings these cars in and ask them.

This conversation has played out time and time and time again. Every single one has ended the same. Some poor smuck just got taken and another non-legalized Skyline winds up on Ebay wating for the next victim.

Yeah, that would be the seller who never responded to my inquiry (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/t118911.html) about which RI would be doing the legalization. I suspect some shenanigans will be involved in the $1000 acquisition of a vin, but I wish you the best of luck sir.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but I was browsing eBay earlier, and the same car is up for sale again by the same seller. I can only assume the deal fell through? Anyway, you can take a look at the auction here (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=6392&item=2430379548). Maybe slix can tell us what happened?

Hey i responded earlier but i guess the server was too busy. After I won the bid for the skyline, I was bombarded with people asking me for the guy's info. Apparently, he has been neglecting those who have purchased engines from and not replying after he receives payment. He seemed like a nice enough guy but was out of the country for a while, and had switched addresses within the week and seemed to have a lot of things goin on that just rubbed me the wrong way. When I got hold of him and asked what was up, his answers were not satisfactory. I offered to give him earnest money and pay the rest upon delivery, but he wouldnt accept, and I couldn't risk it. Looking back it was probably the right choice, considering all he was offering.
