A buddy of mine needs to get a truck that has seating for seven.
(he has three kids).

He has a QX4 now but needs something bigger.
He was looking at the Accura MDX but did not like the way that it drove (he said like a mini-van).

He will never be taking this off-road.

Well what are your guys thoughts?

MDX!
That thing has so many creature comforts! And a pretty cool diff lock too(and it really works). Ultra low emissions. Independant AC/heat front / rear.

Not for me (but my wife LOVES hers)!

Um, duh!!! What's wrong with a Disco series II?

Seating for 7, $35K.

The MDX isn't bad, but does it really seat 7? if so, do the last two people sit on the roof? :D

The Sequoia is like a big Xterra. It's a truck with lots of seats and there is no mistaking that. Works for me, but most people in the full size SUV market might be turned off by it.

Good suggestion...but after Kyle on XOC I can't even type DISCO w/out picturing the fool. Everytime I see one, I'll think of that lugnut.:(

hehe, I know what you mean! I love Discos too much to let someone like that ruin the taste. I'm pretty sure he only represents a small part of the Disco owner population.

It's not like he told anyone anything they didn't already know...he just had to be an ass about it. but then, i can be an ass too sometimes; especially, well, um, nevermind! :D

If he never takes it off-road? Why not a minivan? Great gas mileage, more room, excellent saftey, smooth carlike ride, front wheel drive.

Not to mention half the cost of a Seqouia. Does he tow anything?

He hates mini-vans. I also suggested this but it is not an option.

No man should ever, I mean EVER, drive a minivan!

depends on the van
I had a Nissan mini van ('87) it rocked, room for all my hell raising buddies, it had a built in fridge between the front seats, it could tow a trailer with the bikes on it and haul all the gear for a weeks worth of riding (mainly fuel ;-)

I rolled it down the freeway a few times :-( I still miss that van.

Wasn't that one of the ones that Nissan was trying to get off the roads because of a fire problem? Sucks you rolled it, but maybe you did Nissan a favor? If I absolutely had to, the only one I would drive is the Honda and it would have to an EX model in grey. Otherwise, forget it!

beats me if it was or not. I know working on the motor was a HUGE pain in the ass ;-)

Holy Chit...Vanagons offroad! :D

I forgot about the camper vans. Those are cool because they serve a purpose other than shopping at the mall and jauling kids to soccer practice!

Yeah Ben, remember when Nissan was trying to buy back all their old vans and give the owners good deals on the Quest? I think a lot of people did it because it's been a long, long time since I've seen one on the road.

If the VW Synchro's didn't need their valve covers replaced every 1.5 years (costs over a grand) I would love to have an offroad camper version.

Check out the water crossing. I hadn't thought about it, but if you sealed up the engine bay those things would be awesome for fording. Even stock the front end makes such a good bow wave and the air intakes are up by the windows. :D

ChuckH
11-25-2001, 04:41 PM
And those are only the air intakes for the ventilation, right? Or do they actually plumb some of that all the way back to the engine?

I guess my question is whether or not they are still air cooled when submerged in water? :D

Schludwiller
11-25-2001, 04:51 PM
The Synchro's are water cooled. So are any VW Vans made after '79. The air intake is inside the engine compartment, but if sealed (except for the two vents up high) would be quite watertight.

Um, oh yeah! I guess I knew that but it slipped my mind. It's easier to associate the vans with air cooled engines.

So, when are you taking your Subaru offroad? :silly2:

No. That one ('97 GT) is for going fast around corners. My old '84 Subaru 4x4 GL wagon was the offroad and ski vehicle. No rust, new paint, rebuilt engine, new transmission, and they still had the 4-Lo Transfer case. That was an awesome vehicle until some jackass totalled it by hitting my wife at a stoplight.

This is the '83 version. (mine was metalic blue)

Actually, if I were shorter and skinnier, I'd like to have one like the '83 in the picture. I always liked the older ones like that before they turned them into the boxy ones later. Unfortunately, I have a hard time fitting in them. I also liked and still like the Brats for some reason.

Too bad. You could have joined the Northwest Subaru Offroad Club.
http://www.users.qwest.net/~qman/ECHatchpatrolec1.jpg

My subaru had the roo-bar on the far right. No, not a brushguard. It was rock solid and mounted to the frame. I hit a snow wall one time with it, and didn't have any damage. It really was the ultimate ski car. Low center of gravity, Hi and Lo 5-spd 4wd, and basically a water cooled VW engine in it. Just keep putting in oil, they never die.

So next time someone says you can't offroad in a Subaru:

This is near Reiter Pit, WA. Flying'S and I turned back at this point. We weren't sure it was the trail anymore.

This one is my favorite. It's Evans Creek, WA (Nobody has taken their Xterra there yet). The bottom pic is the position they were in. The top pic is them inside the Subaru.

Schlud I thought you never wheeled before the Xterra???

I thought I was the only who liked Subarus? My friend KevinK had an '80 Brat we used to hunt with in MT and that thing would get around as well as any Jeep! Indestructible little truck. He now has 6 of them in his backyard as parts donors to keep two of them running! I wish I had some picks like Schlud does! We got that Brat into some hairy-assed places and we called it hunting. not four wheeling!!! :D
