Nitrous Oxide Info

Since some people have been asking about it lately, I will post up some info for ya. Nitrous Oxide has been in automotive use since the late 1950's. It is a safe and effective way of adding power to your maxima, but like all things, abuse equals destruction, and it must not be taken lightly. When used properly, NOS can add over 100 HP and close to 200 ft/lbs of torque to your Maxima. If you want a more technical breakdown of exactly what Nitrous Oxide is, read this: http://www.holley.com/HiOctn/ProdLine/Products/NOS/systeminfo.html
But basically in a nutshell, NOS increases power by adding more parts oxygen and cooling down your intake charge. The best off the shelf kit to use for the Maxima is NOS kit #5124, which comes with everything you need to run a 50 shot, and with a couple small upgrades, a 60 and 70 shot too. It is a dry kit, which means only Nitrous is injected into the intake, you get your extra fuel through your injectors. A wet kit adds the fuel and nitrous together before the MAF, which is not reccomended for cars with long intake runners like the Maxima, because fuel can puddle in your intake manifold and cause an intake manifold backfire, not a good thing. There are people using a wet system, that is up to them and I am not knocking it, to each his own, these are just my OPINIONS. There is also Direct port, in which individual injectors are routed to each of the six cylinders via the intake manifold. This is the safest and most effective system, but also the most expensive and hardest to set up correctly. Now with the 50 shot, or .032 jet, you can safely run without any other mods. This is not saying you won't have any problems, you still must check your spark plugs for signs of detontation, and you may have a weak stock fuel pump. The kit takes about a day to install, and includes a fuel pressure safety switch and a full throttle switch, to ensure you have safe fuel pressure and are running WOT before NOS flows. YOU MUST NOT BYPASS THESE or all safety is gone, it's there for a reason. Most of the times you here of something bad happening from running NOS, it's because someone bypassed something. Now, if you have a 5 speed, you SHOULD be okay, depending on the condition of your clutch, but I recommend going to an ACT street clutch anyway. Auto's, get a tranny cooler and a VB mod. Can you run without it? Sure. But you already spent around $4-500 for a basic NOS setup, so why not do it right? Now, you will also want to get one step colder spark plugs, these will help prevent detonation, I recommendNGK PFR6B-11 plugs. You will also want to reduce the gap by .004 for every 50 HP you add, WITH your other mods included. Now, some other things you can get to increase your safety level are:
Window switch: Allows you to specify when you want the NOS to turn on and off via RPM modules. I'd say your best bet is 3600RPMS and 6200RPMS. You want this so you don't spray to early (bad) and not into the rev limiter (really really bad)
Fuel pressure gauge: Save some extra money and get a full sweep model, they are more accurate and it will pay off with tuning. Make sure you get an electric one, you don't want fuel in the cabin.
Air fuel ratio meter: These really are not very accurate unless you run it off it's own O2 sensor, and those units are pretty expensive, I reccomend a Tomie if you must have one.
EGT: Get this over the A/F meter. Exhaust temp is a sure fire sign if your running rich or lean. You want to be right around 810-820 degrees F. Apexi makes one that you can set to turn off your NOS if the temp gets too high, I recommend it.
Bottle heater: You need a bottle pressure of around 8-900 psi to run correctly, so get a bottle heater and you won't have to worry about it.
NOS pressure gauge: Let's ya know what pressure your at.
Bottle blanket: Helps keep that bottle warm and pressure up!
Purge valve: Used to clear your lines of air, so your NOS hits harder, or to clear the NOS out when your ready to shut the car off.
Fuel pump: I would STRONGLY recommend getting an upgraded fuel pump if you plan on going over a 60 shot, or else you run the risk of running lean. Get Walborro pump GSS342, it's specified for an eclipse, but it fit's the maxima without modication. It will flow all the pressure you could ever need, and then some. You will also need a fuel pressure regulator to go along with it, I recommend an AEM universal model.
I don't know everything about NOS, but I try and help out where I can. I'm currently running an 80 shot .042 on my 97 Auto, with a VB mod and tranny cooler. I have a window switch, bottle heater, EGT, and fuel pressure gauge, along with a Walborro pump and an AEM regulator. The highest I have seen a Maxima dyno on NOS is close to 300 HP and 400 Ft/lbs of torque, and a 100 shot run at 1100 psi, so the power potential is definetly there. My best 1/4 sor far was a 14.4 on a 50 shot with low bottle pressure. So far, the fastest confirmed Maxima is running 12's, an auto on NOS. He uses the JWT kit, which is ECU controlled, but it's only for the 95-96, and cost big bucks. Check out www.cattman.com if your interested. Hope this helped, I'm tired of typing... :D

That's funny, I took all that time to type this, and I still see NOS questions elsewhere... :(
