BRABUS

Simple!

-Viper (sounds vicious)
-Cobra (same as Viper)
-Arnage (mean sounding name)
-Lexus (has "rich" tune to it)
-Mercedes (has class written all over it!)

Adam

-BMW - sends chills up my spine
-Pagani - sounds like a rich supercar (which it is)
-Zonda - an extremely strong Andean wind, not to mention very fast, just like the car
-Viper - same reason as above
-Corvette - seams to go very smoothly, but aggressively

Racer 20

Porsche

These are the cars who should have there names rethought. For a whil.

Aztek (Go back to 3000 BC!)
Imag
Evoq
Escalade (As you can tell by now, I don't really like Cadillac)
Paseo (What the hell does that mean?)
Bravada
XG 300! (Hyundai should not be allowed to make Luxury cars)
Tiburon
Passat (Sounds like a name for a Swedish Cat)

and other econo box vehicles

However, the coolest name IMO is the TOYOTA Landcruiser, it sounds like you could conquer everest with a name like "Landcruiser" It also makes land feel like Sunday driving, they should call the next one "Mountain Masher" or something, I sound like an ztek designer now.

Heep

The old Landcruisers were good, before they switched to luxo mobiles.

Ever notice the XG300 looks an awful lot like a Lincoln LS?

I agree with all yah guys, Maxima sounds cool though don't it. At least it somewhat relates to a word unlike camry and all that crap.

I couldn't for the life of me figure that out! I knew it looked like something... Lincoln LS. LOL. Somewhere there was a thread that asked if the XG300 looked like the new Q45. LOL again.

My favorite car names:
Impreza
Aristo (Lexus GS' name in Japan)
Silvia
Skyline
Saber (Acura CL's name in Japan)
Viper
(I'm not counting alpha-numerics as names. Otherwise I'd include NSX, S2000 and MR2)

I hate it when companies (*cough*Toyota*cough*) use names that mean or portray absolutely nothing. Camry? Corolla? Paseo? Tercel? Come on now....

Actually, I think that "Camry" was a bastardized version of the japanese word for crown. "Kamuri," or something like that.

I like the way japanese auto companies insist on using english letters like "L" and "V" that don't translate correctly back into japanese. They have Honda Cibics and Prerudes, Nissan Silbias and Skyrines and Toyota Cororras and Cericas.

--Heep

Silver S2000 is right about the origin of the name Camry. "Kan-muri" has something to do with the crown of a flower. Paseo probably means "path" (kind of a disgusting sounding name; should have kept the original name 'Cynos'), and a tercel is a male hawk. You know, when automakers create a new car, they form entire commitees dedicated to making the perfect name. I highly doubt there are many car names that no meaning at all.

Even though I own a Celica, I can't seem to figure out where the name came from. Any ideas?

Haha, some of these names sound painfully botched up when you actually hear the Japanese say them out loud. Sometimes they pronounce them with 4 or 5 syllables when they should only have 2 (soo-kai-rai-neu=skyline, for example). Back in '90, I heard this japanese man describe the Lexus SC300 as "Soh-wah-rah". A month later, I realized he was not describing it at all, but saying its name, Soarer!

Bless them for not spelling their cars' names phoenetically.

Perhaps it's not a specific car name, but I feel that the nicest sounding label is that of the specialty model designing company, Pininfarina. Not only is it ear-candy, but it's also a symbol of superb craftsmanship.

As does Jaguar when pronounced with strong emphasis on the "U" with a distinct english accent . . .

I like Jaguar with a British Accent too, I know some people call it Jagwire which makes them sounds like idiots. Pinifarina is also awesome but, I like Barchetta the best. I translated it from Italian-English and it apparently means "Small Boat" ???

Although their names suck they do have meaning, you just never had a foreign language maybe, Paseo means walk/stroll in espanol, and tercel means something, but I had some of the worst spanish teachers and didnt learn much, but yeah, most names have meaning. just in case you cared

And the car with the coolest name is a 300ZX and then Maxima =)

I've yet to figure out what "Lanos", "Nubira", and "Leganza" mean

Cannabis
11-15-2001, 10:14 PM
I don't know what Lanos Nubira or Leganza mean, but Nubira is fun to say. ;P.

I have never liked a car name that isn't a name, but a letter/number. Doesn't neccesarily mean I won't like the car, but I won't like the name. number/letter combos should be reserved for trim levels in my head.

I still haven't forgiven Acura for ditching the legend name(CL SUCKS). Why I will never like them.(yes I am contradicting myself, but hey it is my opinion I can contradict it where I see fit)

Dodge Power Wagon is a perfect description
Ramcharger is cool too
I think Mercury is an appealing brandname, much nicer than that other Ford aka Volvo. Pity it isn't allowed to flourish

But I reckon the best names belong to Studebaker.
STOO-DEE-BAY-KAHH
Even 'Studie' alone is wonderfully evocative and then dress it up with Cruiser (Land Cruiser too) Dictator, Challenger, Daytona etc

Maybe not unique to Oz but here the Mazda 323 is known in the trade as the 'Tarzan'
'tree-to-tree' ... get it?
Many years ago we were inflicted with the Datsun Cedric, which is about as nancy as you can get ... 'Dat-thun Thedric'

Worst are those ridiculous japlish ones. Imagine bragging to your mates down the pub that you've just bought a Guppy?
Or a Mazda Bongo van?
If they're good and loyal mates you'd probably and rightly get bashed by them if you admitted owning a Daihatsu Hi Jet Dumbo
Speaking of Daihatsus and crap model names, I recall a local road test of a Daihatsu 'Applause'. The tester hated the car, thoroughly detested it, moaning about low power, tinny build, underweight brakes and many other defects, and concluded by saying that .. "the Applause is only marginally preferable to the clap" ..

Nissan have had some gooduns and some bloody god-awful ones. They have the Pulsar, which I always thought was cool - being into stars and all. And the Primera - that's cool; like primeval or primal. Cool stuff. Then they have....tha Homy. The Laurel (where's the Hardy). The Gloria. The Silvia (sorry guys - it's not a good name :p ). The Cedric (bugger mentioned it before me!). Oh dear.

(Unfortunately I have to say I'm not at all sure that Skyline is a particularly strong name for a car. Godzilla is, though :D :D

And despite my predjudice against many American cars, I have to say they come up with some of the coooooooolest names: Mustang, Cobra, Viper, Trans-am, Firebird, Camaro. Beautiful names :D :D :D

Thunda Downunda

Quote from Moondog: "Then they have ... tha Homy"

... geez - thats a bad one ... LOL !!

though I rather like the indefagidably US auto characteristics of a smooth highway ride and plenty of power
and those names are fantastic

'cept for the worrysome Chevy ((((impact))))

ps: ever heard of the "Three Little Buffalos"? (not kidding)

Cars don't necessarily need a "strong" name to have a nice fitting name. Since the Skyline was always the beast of the family, it seems appropriate to have a bit more passive secondary sports car. And whatever happened to the old tradition of naming vehicles of transportation with female's names? Or referring to them as "she"? I tell you, marketing has really infiltrated and assassinated culture.

As for Skyline, it may sound puny when placed next to a Firebird, but I also feel it's fitting because the most perfect image I get in my head of this car is seeing it cruise the night-fallen techno-electronic modernized streets of downtown Tokyo. It blends in with the city's skyline; a part of industrial night-life which has spawned the various 'midnight racing clubs' strewn throughout the country. And NO I don't play Tokyo Extreme Racer--this is just how I always thought of it.

Oh come on now, many people here try hard to pronounce European products the way they are pronounced overseas, so why doesn't the rest of the world pronounce American products the way it's pronounced here? I understand that many languages say zet, zed, zeta, etc. but there should be a few exceptions and the Corvette ZEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE ARE-WUN is one. I think Nubira has something to do with clouds. Lanos might be the same but I'm not sure. Leganza is obviously made up, but it has a nice ring to it.......Didn't the Acura Legend become the RL? And the Vigor became the TL, but in Japan they changed it from Vigor to Sabre. And isn't the CL a domestic-only product, being that it is also built on the domestic-only Accord coupe? I always thought this was the reason why that big zoomed up taillight on the cover of GT3 is a CL's taillight--to represent our side of the world, but I could be wrong.
