******1996 Taurus GL.128000 miles.*****
After some thgt, i am keeping this car, simply becasue its running
fine, even on 8hr drives, besided a buying another used car is a big
pain in itself and never know what you get esp in the sub $4000
category.
I am thinking about getting it checked/serviced. Any opinions onwhat
specifically need to be done. The engine is good, burns no oil, gives
20 mpg in the city, no other issues with any accessories.
* I am more concerned about the front end suspension linkages &
steering.
* Is it necessay to repalce struts? I am leaning more towards bushings
etc.
* I get an occasional "dok" sound when i turn the steering fast at low
speeds like when parking and making a 90 deg turn etc.
* And the back brakes always squeak when it rains, thgt they have
fairly new pads.
any specific opinions will greatly help me before i take it to a
mechanic. Generally askin him to check the front end, dosent seem a
good idea.
thanks,

Hey there,
Why not look into a manual or try this website.

It contains information on a suggested maintanence plan.

Hi: You mentioned mostly mechanical issues....so don't forget the PM* plan for the fluids. Knocking, crunching, clicking or snapping of the front when cornering is usually the CV joints or stabilizers at the mileage you mention. Strut bearings might also be a culprit. Normally, if the struts are not leaking and youur car passes a 'bounce test', they are probably OK, but mileage is the key to consider a replacement strategy. Struts maintain your cornering and prevent bouncing too much. You seem to indicate that you have had the car from square one. If so, any Ford dealer will give you a PM* - (Preventative Maintenance) booklet, which is mileage based to keep your vehicle in a good, safe driving condition. PM of your fluids can avoid more expensive component failure....transmission is an example.
