For the Jetta that is....................After I rear ended a truck at 55 km/h- The impact was inevitable- some jack-ass decided to indicate at the last minute to turn into his driveway- so the truck had to stop pretty suddenly- I was following at about 1 1/2 seconds behind and slightly distracted by a Peugeot 1O6 GTi parked alongside me (The car that forms part of my AF name) so when it set in there was bugger all time to do anything. The crash was definitley an accidental thing I admitted full fault- and since the truck was undamaged I let him go- he was pretty cool about it all. But that didn't change the fact the Jetta was a mess- the bonnet was bent, radiator buted, intake pipe had broken off, the front fascia was smashed into an oblivion, coolant leaked all over the other wise undamaged front bumper and the right front quarter panel was twisted - not to mention the radiator had been pushed back into the engine :(
Really I think the Jetta took the impact well for 55 km/h into a almost stand-still truck- any weak-ass piece of Jap-crap would have folded in the same situation- in fact it was only a little worse than when my friend crashed into the back of an MR2 in his parents Sentra station wagon but the parts could be expensive to source and if the repair bill climbs over $2500 then it gets auctioned off and I'm left looking for a new car- probably Jap/Korean-crap if there are no good manual VW's going for sale:frown: I really don't want this car to be written off- it is my first car and has been an awesome car to drive, great car to learn about how the car works and has many fond memories to go with it :( I really don't know what I'd do if that repair bill does climb to over 2500 dollars- because I'd be lsot without my trusty Jetta :(:(:(:(
Another sucky thing is that because the truck was undamaged Third Party insurance aint covering me
My parents have been relaxed about the whole thing "Don't worry about it" "This thing happens to us all" "We'll get you a new car" "You can drive my car if you need it" which is good but I'm still pretty distraught and cut up about it all

Damn Jared- that has really got to suck- having had about 4 or 5 crashes I know how it feels to be in one- they shake you up a bit- and I know how much you loved that car- but it's a material thing- it can be replaced- the important thing is thar you are OK had you bought that Civic- you'd be in shit-street now- Gotta love the solidity of German cars :)
Keep your head up little bro- and go and get yourself a trade and exchange tomorrow morning :) just in case
Also fixed that thing in the post that you wanted me to fix  :bigthumb:

My "weak-ass piece of Jap-crap" (Toyota Tercel vintage '82) faired better in a similiar accident at about 30mph. (slightly slower than your accident) I rear ended a minivan (which came to a stop when some jerk cut him off) at an intersection.
The radiator was pushed back into the pulleys, and the front end was bent up, though the hood wasn't damaged at all. I drove it two or three miles to the nearest shop I knew of (which luckily was a good one, and on the same road I was on) watching the temperature gauge. He pulled the front end out with a truck, and put a new radiator on - back on the road. He even pushed the front benders back in. Total cost? just under $400 - way too much for a car I paid $600 for. But what the hey, I needed a new radiator anyway.
I'm sorry to hear that your VW is in worse shape - it must suck to loose a car to an accident. I hope you find another good car - though before you try anything korean - at least try a FIAT 128:biggrin:

In all fairness- This truck was about 2000 Kg heavier than your average Previa or Voyager- I'm talking about a truck of pretty big size here being used at a Construction site- not some wussy ass pick-up truck- and a fair bit higher as well. So naturally the bonnet would bend when it hit the truck- the front fascia is mainly made of plastic so little suprise that got smashed- and the headslights and right 1/4 panel were at the point of the impact. I could drive the car off the road- and then back it out and drive it onto the tow truck. But the panel beater I go to is in Ellerslie- and that is a long way to drive a radiator-damaged car from St Heliers.
Anyway- I'm looking through the Trade and Exchange for a new car since the panelbeater doesn't think it'll be under 2500 to fix it- Not sure what I want next- I've seen a 1994 Honda Accord EXiS (NZ Built range-topper) for about the price I'm looking- high km's- but cheap parts- and there is a Honda servicer right down the road- although the Garage across the road speacialises in VW's :( I have seen a Golf GTi in the T&E as well (Mk2- my favourite) and a Mk3 Jetta- though the price is so low that it raises suspision that something isn't right with it. I do sort of want a FIAT Tipo DGT- but the reliability issues put me right off it. Maybe I'll have a look at some Used Imports as well- but carefullness is a definite must.

i feel your pain, man, as i almost had the exact same thing happen to me yesterday. it was rainy and the roads were slick, and i was following a full-size dual-axle Dodge pick-up at about 2.5 seconds at 90kmph, when the dick-bag decides out of nowhere to turn into a hidden driveway. i had no time to react, and when i DID slam on my brakes, the tires locked up because of the slick ground, and i also lost steering control. i luckily had my wits about me to pump the brakes and my car veered off into the gravel shoulder. i wouldn't have really been too P-O'd about wrecking my POS, but it's the only car i'll have until September, as my parents have halted me buying a car until after my court-date for my ticket.
PS didn't you say in another thread that you hate it when everyone generalizes that all Japanese cars are rice? and yet here you are refering to them as "Jap-Crap"?

I'm not saying all Jap cars are crap ;) But I'm mainly talking about the stupid assed uded imports that come in with 1.3 and 1.5 engines despite them being almost as big as an Accord- I have a soft-spot for NZ-built and even NZ new Japanese vehicles- and thats what I'm probably getting next. EG Civic LXi's are high on my list as is the KF Ford Laser Lynx :D I've decided to fuck European and US cars until I can afford the parts or can buy one new and I still don't like used imports.
Yeah and the car is written off- the panelbeater couldn't find any headlights- and parts came to $850 and labour would be well over $3000 and I bought the car for $4000 so there is no point- it'll be auctioned off- for about $800-1000 if I'm lucky.
