When you're at a stoplight and a guy pulls up next to you, what does it prove if he smokes you or you smoke him when the light turns green?

I don't know. What does it prove when a boxer knocks the other guy out? That the other was better trained? If we're not betting, does it matter? We can't really answer that, but we sure love watching the fiasco.
It's human nature to want to compete, and to want to see others compete. It's all nature until you let the competitive juices make your judgements for you.
The key is knowing when to back-off, stop, or not start at all.
Until then, we'll just keep on pondering human nature.

i think everyone pretty much covered the topic, but hell...
you came to the street racing forum.
what do you think it proves?
in that instant, for whatever reason, your car, or his car, is faster.
don't make me quote vin for this one.
winning is winning. it doesn't matter if it's an inch or a mile.
i believe that this smiley was made for you for asking this question.
this thread should get shut down...

IMO it seems that street racing doesn't involve a lot of skill.... you're just "competing" against some avg. schmoe with an ego.
In the above example about boxing, whether you're a boxing fan or not, the guys that step into the ring are seriously committed and are doing so in a controlled environment. They've earned the right to be there.
Street racing doesn't prove you're a better or worse driver than the next guy. It doesn't take any credentials. It just shows who's willing to mash the gas hardest on public roads.
I guess I don't 'get it'.

trust me there are good drivers out there. and there are very very fast street driven cars. so lets say i pull up to a viper. there is always on on deer park avenue. and if he can't drive for shit. and i beat him. then i get massive respect from imports. and i spend all this money turbo chargin my car for nothing. if i have nothing to prove and if everyone lacks skills, then my near stock 240 would've gotten the job done. however i want to compete with the big boys. so forced induction is the only way to go.

YOu prolly have an auto in your Teg...And with Auto's you are right...It doesnt take a lot of skill just smashing the gas at the right time...But with a stick it does becuase you have to determine when your powerband is and how long to hold a gear and....Damn there is a lot of factors when you are in a stick. :thefinger

Hey there's no need to attack anyone because they asked a question...
For the record, my Teg is a 5 speed, it's stock and I don't care about how fast it goes. I love racing but I do it on tracks that require lots more skill than dropping the clutch at the right time. I've won races and championships in karts and have raced very well in Formula 2000 cars.
The reason I "don't get it" is because I know how to drive and in my book dragging someone at a light doesn't prove anything whether you win or lose.
It's only using 1 skill, the cars are always different (apples to oranges) and the other guy(s) could be fast, could be slow. I suppose if it's for the hell of it then that's the only justification needed.
Case in point. A heavy weight boxer beats the living daylights out of some guy on the street. Two heavy weight boxers go 12 rounds in a ring in the Olympics. It's worlds apart.
In the big picture neither case matters. But if you wanted to prove something, what would you do?

let me get this straight... when i race on the street, it's against an average schmoe........ so when i take it to the track, i'll race against professinals?? because average people stay on the streets right?

I see your bet, and raise you one. I completely agree with you, it doesn't matter if you beat someone at a light, but what does it matter if you beat someone on a dragstrip? Or a road course, auto-x, etc...?
I rarely ever race anyone on the street anymore, simply because I don't think it's worth risking getting a ticket, my car impounded, or worse just to prove I'm faster than some guy, when I can easily go to a strip and do it legally. But I don't understand why you're going after street racing for this? Unless you're getting paid or compensated for winning, it doesn't really matter if you win or lose no matter where it's at, not just on the street.

The reason people street race is for fun. 2 nights ago I pulled up to a stop light and a white integra rolled up next to me and revved his engine. He knew and I knew that he couldnt take my 5.0 but I still raced him anyways. After leaving him when he went for second (he had a five speed, and sadly I have an auto) I slowed down and he caught up to me. I was laughing and when I looked over he was smiling too. 2 complete strangers got enjoyment out of something as simple as lining up and going for it.
We only went to about 50 in a 35 mph zone in the middle of the night and no one got hurt so whats the problem with it?
In all seriousness if there were a drag strip in this area I would go and do my racing there but there isint so Ill just have to make due with the street.

Yes fatninja, on the street you're more likely to find avg people. On the track, while not necessarily professional, the people there tend to know what they're doing more so than the population at large.
On average random people on the street are not going to be good at a particular sport [ice hockey, basketball, baseball, tennis, etc.]. But when you go to a league for one of those sports, you know you're playing against people who tend to be more experienced and capable.
Anyway, I think I get it now... it's for the fun of it. Thanks for pointing that out Carguy.

on average, i don't care about someone's skills on the street.
everyone at the track is a better driver?
i doubt that.
if you want to race me, then what do i care if you have no skills?
people who think they have above average skills find out the hard way, whether at the street or at the track, that they do/don't have the skills.
what's the difference?
no skill in street racing? or racing on city/country roads? really?
b/c the street is so sticky you can just drop your clutch and go?
it takes finesse to not bog, and not spin when you launch.
it's the same thing, on a less sticky surface.
you're asking in regards to legality, really.
and if it's illegal, then what's the point.
well, it's legal on a track, so what's the point?
to prove you've got a faster car, or better skills, yes?
so what's the difference on the street...
oh wait... there isn't one.

the funny thing is why are we calling it street racing....the proper term should be street drag racing(except for the roll on races which imo is still a form of drag racing).....
personally i prefer stuff with corners....like autox....not that i don't like drag racing....but i push myself much harder on a autox couse....and i enjoy it much more....
one of the things i also love about autox is that you never have the time to glimpse the tach so you have to drive by feel alone....
