Somebody tell me this can't be done. NOS systems are pretty expensive so I was thinking about a cheaper way to get more O2 into my engine. Here's what I was thinking. I'd buy a small cylinder of compressed O2, and put a gas line from the trunk to an electronic solenoid valve ($70) in the engine bay, and wire the valve to a switch in my cabin. The valve wouldn't be mounted directly into the intake piping, but rather, just shoot O2 into the ambient air just in front of my cone filter. Theoretically (in my crazy head anyways), that should mean the air filter would suck air that was closer to 80-90% O2, instead of just 20% O2 like regular air. Basically, more O2 per volume, just like a NOS system. Can anyone tell me why this wouldn't work?
I think I'm just not doing it cause I'd probably blow myself up somehow. :newburn:

all i have to say is find out how n2o works then rethink your idea:smile:

beside...i don't think i'd want pure o2 in my car....no matter how much:bigthumb:

N2O just breaks down to form N2 and O2 at temps higher than 570 deg F. All is it doing is adding more O2 per volume. My idea is like a NOS fogger.
The only real difference is that O2 is much more volatile than N2O. So I think I agree with you, O2 in the engine bay just sounds like a recipe for a car-B-Q.

if you want details the expert on this would be sluttypatton.....

anyway if you spray it before the intake you would run out of O2 in about 1/2 a sec....have you seen how much air gets sucked in.....if you have not then watch a video when they imerse the intake in water......sucks a bucket it in a fraction of a sec.....so unless you have a huge tank it will not work....


second if by some miracle it would work or you would spray it into the intake the concentration of O2 would be so high that it will cause detonation......


there is a reason we use N2O(two parts nitrogen one part oxigen)....when there are compounds much richer in oxigen out there.....any more oxygen densinty than that and the explosion, instead of being smooth becomes violent(detonation) and blows up your engine.....


sorry to ruin your ideea.....but those are the reasons it would not work.....

By increasing the amount of oxygen in the intake air the burning velocity and temperature will increase, as well as the cylinder pressure. With 80-90% oxygen you will blow yourself up. Also, nitrous don't react in the intake like pure O2 can. Nitrous does also have a cooling effect under the compression phase that increase resistance to detonation which you need because of the increased pressure and temperature.

But an increase to 30-40% should be possible, but to have the tank in the car is also dangerous, and tanks also gets empty really fast. However, membranes can be used to enrich the oxygen content of the air.

well as i said high percentage of oxygen will cause detonation

oh and btw the cooling effect is when nitrous expands not compress....all gases have the same endotermic effect under expansion not just nitrous....so O2 would have the same cooling effect....but still the reaction with pure O2 would still cause detonation.....

and i'm pretty sure an increase of 40% O2 could cause detonation even with premium gas....N2O is about as high as you can go percetagewise of O2 without causing detonation at least in normal aplications......

Like earlier mentioned N2O breaks down to N2 and O2 in temperatures above 570 deg F. This temperature will be reached under the compression phase, and it should take heat energy to breakdown N2O. This will also have a cooling effect similar to the one methanol has when it vaporise under the compression phase.

Otherwise N2O also have a cooling effect while expanding in the intake.

Johan, I was quite interested in oxygen-enriching devices, like enriching membranes like you mentioned, and SiC filter tubes (can't remember their names off the top of my head). I quickly dropped the idea because the flow rate is very low, at least for now.
