Borg Warner T5

I recently purchased an 88 LX 5.0 This is the first Ford I have owned. My 5 speed transmission went out and I believe it is a Borg Warner T5. My question is, will a T5 from a 4 cylinder Mustang work behind a 5.0 or is it too much torque. I know it will fit by dementions but is the 4 cyl. tranny set up with different gear ratios and weaker internals. Any help would be appreciated as I can get a 4 cyl. T5 for 30 bucks.

They are different. Youll snap that 4cyl T-5 real quick behind a V-8

well from what i hear T-5 are crap, a friend of mines 350chevy(camaro) just ripped one up and it only has somthing like 200hp/250torque, and he WAS driving it right, and useing it right.. so if you plan to do some sutff to your engine you might wanan look into a stronger tranny

A chevy T-5 and a Ford are very different. The Chevy sucks really bad. I know some Ford people blast T-5's also. But Ive know to many 11 second Stang owners using Stock T-5's and Z-series to listen to them. Hence why I opted for a pro-shifted T-5 over a Tremec(heavier).

The Borg Warner T-5 that came in the 4 cylinder mustang has a different input shaft, different internals, and different gearing.

The T-5 in the 4 banger was rated for 240lb/ft.

The T-5 used in the F-body was a non-world class T-5. The world class T-5's first appeared in the Mustang in 1985. They featured a better syncronizers. The torque holding capacity stayed the same at 265lb/ft with the switch, but the 1st gear ratio dropped from 2.95 to 3.35. In 1990 the T-5 was upgraded again, this time adding a stronger 3rd gear. It was re-rated at 305lb/ft. The T-5 was upgraded again for the 1993 Cobra, and featured a tapered roller bearing, and phosphate coated gears. With this, it was rated at 315lb/ft. Finally, the T-5 Z spec was released, with the Cobra enhancements plus a steeper 2.95:1 1st gear ratio. It carried a 330lb/ft rating.

Something to note, Tremec purchased the rights to Borg Warner's transmission designs in 1997 so the Borg Warner T-5 and T-56 became the Tremec T-5 and T-56. Tremec did this because they built junk, and the manufacturers weren't interested in their products. The 3550 was based on the old Ford Toploader, but with some revisions. Tremec quality control is pathetic, and the tolerances are too high. The shifter coming on the 3550 made it very hard to shift, and replacement of the shifter would void the warranty. The TKO is a lot stronger, but requires a lot more money.

Quite frankly, the T-45, which was basically a revised T-5 in a lot of ways was a total piece of junk, and the TR-3650 I'm using now is a pile as well. I've never heard a transmission more clunky than the TR-3650 in my 2002 GT. The syncros are already damaged at 17,000mi and I never powershift.

My impression of Tremec is that the build garbage. Heavy garbage.

I told the vice president of Tremec, when I met him at Fun Ford Weekend in Ennis, that the 3650 was a piece of shit and that Tremec blows.

:biggrin2:

But I still want a T56.

One more thing I missed.... You Chevy friend must not know too much about Chevys. I believe they never put T-5 behind a 350 cause they knew what would happen.

I thought the 305 tranny was a POS anyways? The only Tremec Chevy uses are the T56 LS1 spec. Back then, I think they used another brand, not borg werner.

I dunno though... I not much of a chevmerolet fan. :eek7:
