Suburban just stopped running

My 2000 suburban was parked with the motor operating to keep the kids cool while they slept for 1.5 hours. Gas gage read appx 1/4 tank at the start. I got in to drive home and the engine stopped after I backed up. Thought it may be out of gas. The gas gage now read below empty mark. I have added 8-9 gallons of gas and the gage still reads below empty. Don't know if the gas ran out or if the fuel pump stopped working...?? Is there a reset needed after you run out of gas or is there someting I should hear if the fuel pump is running. There is normally a high pitch noise that I was told was the fuel pump that could be heard when it was running. I don't know if it makes the same noise when it is not running. I don't hear it now when I turn the ignition on to start. Help please, I am building a house and need the vehicle back in service quick. Thanks

after the vehicle has set a little while, when you turn the key to the on postion you should be able to hear the pump running for a few seconds. it'll be a high pitched noise like you said. if you ran it out of gas, there's a possiblity that it may have damaged the pump by running it dry

Had the same problem. The fuel tank sender wires shorted. Over $900 to repair.

There is a possibility of the pump burning out, but not entirely likely since once the truck would stall out the pump would stop running.
This post could shed some light on it, and refers more toward what David said.

You may be looking at bad/shorted wiring.
When's the last time the fuel filter was changed?
Start by having someone stand at the back of the truck, and listen for a high pitched hum when you turn the ignition to on (not start).
Best of luck, and let us know what happens.

The very worst thing that you can do to a in tank fuel pump is to run it low or out of gas.
The gas is not only used to power the engine it also is used to cool the fuel pump and wireing in the tank.

This sounds like it may be nasty and $expensive$, the previous reply was very acurrate.....RUNNING ONE OF THESE OUT OF GAS IS THE WORST THING YOU CAN DO and by idling for so long the heat build up must have been incredible.
I suggest you read my thread on the next page "Suburban Fuel Pump" and it should shed some light on your problem. And never let it idle so long with your kids in the truck! Read the thread and you'll know why.....
