Tranny question

I am going to swap a ZC into my STD and I have a 5 speed tranny from a 91 lx. However, the place where I am buying the engine is supplying a ZC tranny with it.

I could save a few bucks if I dont take the ZC tranny but I wanted to know which tranny would be the better choice.

The lx tranny has about 100 grand on it and the ZC is probably more like 40-50 grand.

Is there a major difference between the 2?

If you go with the ZC tranny, the benefit is shorter gears which will make you accelerate faster but when your going like 70 down the freeway your rpms will be high like 4.5 grand. Theres a solution to that which is puting an Si final drive in the ZC tranny but lets stay on topic. Anyways, if you do that you have to get an integra intermediate shaft and screw around with axles. If you stay with the lx tranny, like you said you will save money and you can of course use your existing axles. I was in the same type of situation and what I did was bought the ZC engine with tranny and got an Si tranny from ebay for $110. When I got the engine I just took the tranny off it and im now selling it trying to make some of my money back. But to answer your question the ZC tranny is "better" but its up to you.

I think I will stick with the LX tranny since I use my car as a commuter and I am on the highway alot. I need new axles regardless..mine are shot but I guess the civic axles would be cheaper than the integra axles I would need with the zc too right?

Not necessarily, they should be around the same price. Dont take my advice though, check around at some local parts dealers. Ask them for the price of 90-93 Integra axles and the civic ones.

Having equal length axles, like the Zc trans benefits you, but it can be a headache. I dunno what axles you have to use with the Zc trans, but I would bet that those guys are right....its probably 90-93 Integra. If you choose to do that, just make sure that the motor/trans comes with the intermediate shaft.

And I believe you guys have it backwards...The Zc trans is the one that has a better final drive, not the other way around like 91civichatch stated. The Zc trans is a piece of doo doo, unless you replace the gearing with the gears from an Si trans.

I dont think its worth all the trouble.....Just use the lx trans for now, and save up for a nice condition Si trans later.
