HIya all. I have a 1985 Pontiac Trans Am, 5 Speed, 305 engine. The car runs like a charm when it ran. =0( The bird is my play toy so its not my primary source of transportation. The damn thing has sit 4 about 2 weeks and wont start!!! It sat for a week and a half and I had to jump it off to get it running and drove it around for a while. When I try to start, it sounds like it wants to for about 2 or 3 seconds then drowns out like a bad battery, but I have a brand new battery, and even a jump start. We have also tried pushing it down the road and "Popping The Clutch" with no such luck. I am a Firebird fan through and through and refuse to give up on this beauty! Anyone here got any ideas? I also tried cleaning the carb and now contemplating a new starter (but it should start without a starter if I pop the clutch, right?) PLEASE HELP!

Well, as my old auto shop teacher used to say, "You need fuel, air, and spark to make it run." So check the filters first. Then check your plugs, and for fuel flow. Without knowing more I can't really say what it could be.

well, you said its an 85, so its an older car, i would look at the fuler fliter, because on my 1992, it was never changed, and would cause the car to surge a little because it was very cogged up with shit, if you blew on one end, air wouldn't come out the other, so i would check that out,
and buy a code reader and see if the computer throws and codes

I would lean towards an electrical issue. Is it draining the battery in between start-ups? You may have a short somewhere.

Its sounds like a (almost) dead battery. When I turn the key, It sounds normal for 1/2 to 1 full second then slows down to a stop. In the past, it has always sounded like it has had a hard time starting, but always started. Now it doesnt =0(

It sounds like a battery. What is the voltage from it? If it reads less than 12V replace the cables, and if that doesn't work check the alternator. However if it reads 12V try it in another car. You'll know then if it's the battery.
