I want to have the fastest car in my town. The fastest right now is a guy who has 2 rt/10 vipers 94 and 95 i think. I lookied it up and the 1/4 mile time is 12.5 seconds. I have $5000 to spend on engine mods for my 97 gst. Do you think i can beat him while still havin a reliable car?

i don't know about 12.5 sec on a front driver and still being streetable but here's a guide

Buy twin turbos, a shit load of nos and a good ignition system.

the site that i posted a link to says:

"A Stage 2 setup will raise power output on a 2G car from 210hp to nearly 400hp. That can equal mid 12's or possibly high 11 second 1/4 mile times on the track depending on how well the car is tuned and driver skill level."

and no doubt its possible, but be careful

I put 1800 into my 95 and ran 12.7 at 109 (used 14b), but thats AWD. You'll want slicks or a 20g. You'll also need fuel mods including 190/660s and AFC/logger or DSMlink (prefered). Intake, exhaust, clutch, fmic, etc. Assuming you do all the work there should be enough money. 12s on race gas will be easy with 5k, on pump it will require some good driving but its certainly possible.

I dont c how gsx's are faster in the 1/4. I know they got the awd for not spinin out for quicker starts but once the gst grips it can use 100% of its power at one wheel? Not to be disin gsx owners or anything i just dont understand that?

Let me attempt to explain. The ET in the quarter mile is all about the first two gears. That is, the launch and the 1-2 shift. ET is very dependant on those two things. The mph is all about the top end of the track. Let me try to illustrate these points before we get into the AWD vs FWD debate.

I'll use examples that I have personally expereinced with my car, but this happens for everyone, and its been well documented, well known, and the reason behind it are known. That being said...

If you screw up the first part of the run ET goes to hell, but mph is largly unnafected. Example. My clutch wasnt holding so I had to baby the launch and the 1-2 shift. ET was in the 15s, but mph was 119, which is good for mid 11s. The 60 foot time was a 2.8 or so. I could give multiple other examples of this.

If you bollix the last half of the run, mph will suffer, but ET wont change a whole lot. Example. I broke on the 3-4 shift when I was running consistent 12.7s. MPH was hurt, only 80 instead of 108 or so. But ET was still 12.8. I could give many examples of this too...

So now that we have established that, lets talk about AWD vs FWD.

AWD is all about getting the job done off the line. Look at your typical front driver, and this goes for any of them, not just DSMs. On street tires you are lucky to break 2.3s... On my car with street tires I run 1.5s to 1.6s, with the average Joe still getting at least 1.8s on a normal run. Now consider that ET is largely dependant on the launch and the 1-2 gear. Its widely known and accepted that for every tenth you take off your sixty foot, you can take two to three tenths off the ET. So in the extreme case of my 1.5 vs a FWDs 2.3, thats 1.6 seconds to be gained just because it launches harder! So you see, you're simply underestimating the advantage the AWD car has for ET. And you can see this at the track every night. I absolutely destroy everything off the line. Even a mid 9 second Monte with massive slicks and RWD I ran that pulled his front wheels up for 50 feet ran a 1.66 to my 1.56. So FWD doesnt have a chance... For AWD vs FWD I have some baddass videos of my runs that illsutrate it, but the site that was hosting them tossed em.

Now for mph, the FWD tends to do just a bit better. Why? The front half of the track doesnt matter and the lower weight allows a slightly higher mph. But mph doesnt win races, ET does

Hope this clarifies things a bit.

Ya that helps out alot. So u can beat all fwd cars off the line but they have a better mph on the run. Which means on the stip an awd car would b better but like racin some1 on a hghway or a long street run, right???? Also if u rev it up all the way and dump the clutch will u spin out at all?

and theres no fast awd cars that i can think of in town so i think i got it

So if we have an AWD and FWD of equal power, the FWD should do slightly better on the highway, where the AWD will win at the track. Right. The solution in my opinion is to just add more power. There are no FWDs in my area that keep up with me, now that I'm trapping almost 120  There is no comparison to AWD, and there is nothing meaningful enough to ever make me prefer FWD, also know as Wrong Wheel Drive.

If I stutter launch (with boost, on a 5500-6000 rpm rev limiter) I can spin all 4 all the way through first. On wet roads I get torque steer in 2nd and 3rd even with AWD  Keep in mind this didnt happen until roughly 400 wheel HP. And I have to really mean it to do it (in first). My 0-60 when the car hooks up is less than 4 seconds, and I run basically right with most bikes. I think my best logged 0-60 is 3.7 seconds.

I would trade mine for a gsx but every1 is sayin im retarded tradin it because its a spyder.

And another thing i dont like is the 130mph limiter on the ecu. is there any way i can get rid of that?

http://www.dsm.org/how-tos/speedlimiter.htm

As far as the spyder thing, I can see how it is cool. If you arent a hardcore drag racer, you may not want to go AWD. Nothing wrong with that  But just and FYI, in case you havent heard, and/or you win the lottery sometime soon, Road Race has a bunch of AWD converted Spyders running around. Not bad...

tino
07-12-2003, 01:23 AM
How much is it for the conversion?

kjewer1
07-12-2003, 01:32 AM
I dont know the amount, but I'm sure its one of those things, "if you have to ask you probably cant afford it." If you are interested, get with road race engineeing. They're the ones that are doing it.
