CV Axle

My mechanic told me that I need to replace my CV axle because the boot has busted and the axle is worn. He quoted me $160. Is that a reasonable price? What if I continue driving without replacing the axle - what's the worst thing that can happen to the car?

Worst case is it could lock up on a busy freeway and you could seriously hurt someone, you could ruin the seal in the transmission or wear out your bearing in the spindle. Since I do not know the year and engine size, call mazda auto recycling in Rancho Cordova for a used one for about $50-$75 they also warranty allparts for 6 months.

I just recently replaced both halfshafts on my 97 626 V6.
Without a lift it was a helluva job but the parts ran
only 212.00 including the breaker bar and 32 mm 6 pt socket.

You should repleace both axles...160.00 for one axle sounds
reasonable to me since the parts alone for mine ran about
that much.

If you have a V6 the labor should be higher.
