changin out the block

ok well i got my new used block (kinda an oxymoron) this weekend, so this should be it to get it running. i have a couple questions tho.

there is some surface rust on the cylinder walls, what would be best to get it off?

would i be better off disconnecting all the vacuum hoses to the intake manifold and taking it out still attached to the head or unbolting it from the head and leaving it in the bay?

and what tips can you all give me on this? are there any links or am i just stuck with my CHiltons manual?

Well since theres rust on the walls u have to get it honed out. Take it to a machine shop to do that.

call me dumb but what is getting the walls honed? and how much is this gonna cost? b/c i'm poor as hell (i have $0.22 in my bank right now) and i need this car running ASAP...

and is there anyone else out there who can help? i know people have some input

a regualr hone job costs about 40bux, since you have rust forming inside expect to pay more than that.

and your gonna have to remove the intake manifold, it cant just hover there with nothing to hold it up.

and with taking the intake mani off, anything tricky? and how do i disconnect the throttle cable?

honing is a process of smoothing the cylinder walls.

anyway it is not hard to remove the intake mani, just undo the throttle cable, all you need to do is open the throttle up with your hand, and swoop the cable through the notch on the throttle plate thingy, you'll see what i mean, after that, just remove it together with the head and disconnect the lines and shit going to it to seperate the two.

do like he said, leave it bolted to the head, just undo any plugs and hoses that connect to it.

something to consider, if the surface rust is light, just take some motor oil and a cloth rag, and wipe the rust off. most of the time, its just light oxidation, and that takes it off. if that doesnt work, then hone time

if youve never honed before, i suggest getting someone to show you how. no one can adequately describe it to you, its something you have to watch someone do. but basically its running honing stones in the cylinder wall to get all imperfections outta the metal. theres ones that look like toilet bowl cleaners and ones that sorta look like a claw, and both have honing stones. they attach to a drill, and spin inside the cylinder while you move it up and down inside the cylinder. cool stuff, but not something someone can teach you over the internet. not if you want your motor to run well for a long time anyway
